Titan Baseball Loses 4-3 in 10 Innings

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team outhit Christian Brothers, 10-8, but the Titans left 12 men on base in a 4-3, 11-inning loss to the Buccaneers on Thursday, March 17 in Memphis, Tenn.

The Titans' record falls to 4-3 and the Bucs improved to 14-5.

IWU had a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth before the Bucs scored an unearned run on no hits after a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt to send the runner to second and a throwing error on third baseman Jeff Grodecki.

Christian Brothers scored the winning run in the 11th in similar fashion - a leadoff walk, a sacrifice and then a double by Wilson.

Grodecki, senior cehterfielder Ryan Hopp, sophomore catcher A.J. Nathan and freshman designated hitter Bobby Czarnowski each had two hits for IWU, with Czarnowski's double accounting for the team's only extra base hit.

Lefthander Pat Hayn (0-1) took the loss, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing just two hits and two runs, one earned, with three walks. Junior righthander Eric McCullough was the starter and lasted six innings with five hits, two runs and struck out three. Tyler Sill pitched one scoreless frame.

Illinois Wesleyan plays Washington U. in St. Louis at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, then faces Milwaukee School of Engineering later that day at 3:30 p.m. The Titans' spring trip ends with a single game at Washington U. on Sunday, March 20, at 1:30 p.m.
