IWU Stays Alive with 70-68 Win over Augustana

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A basket by Doug Sexauer with one second left gave the Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team a 70-68 win over No. 6 Augustana in Bloomington on Feb. 22 and earned the Titans the No. 4 seed in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament.

The Titans improved to 18-7 overall and finished with a 9-5 record in the CCIW, tied with Wheaton (who earned the No. 3 seed) and Carthage. IWU will play North Central on Friday.
The Vikings, who lost for the third time in the last five games, dropped to 22-3 overall and 11-3 in conference play and lost the tiebreaker to host the league tournament, which will be at North Central.

The Titans led 41-38 at halftime and built up a 49-40 lead with 14:01 to play in the game.
Augustana roared back to tie the game at 58-58 with 6:10 to go and took the lead at 60-58 on a Brandon Kunz basket with 5:38 remaining.

The game was tied at 60 and 63 before two Eliud Gonzalez free throws put the Titans ahead, 65-63 with 2:41 left. Augustana took a 66-65 lead when Bryant Voiles banked in 3-pointer with 2:12 left.
Jordan Zimmer hit a 3-pointer to give IWU a 68-66 lead before Kyle Nelson scored to tie the issue at 68 with 1:36 remaining.

Illinois Wesleyan made 27 of 55 from the field (49.1 percent) and connected on nine of 21 3-point free tries (42.9 percent) while making seven of 11 free throws (63.6 percent).

The Vikings shot 45.6 percent (26 of 57) from the field and made 10 of 20 (50.0 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. Augustana made only six of nine free throws (66.7 percent).

Augustana outrebounded the Titans by a 35-29 total and had 12 offensive boards but the Vikings were guilty of 14 turnovers compared to only seven by the Titans.
