IWU Men Take Must-Win Game Over North Park, 73-57

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team kept its hopes alive for a berth in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with a 73-57 win over North Park on “Seniors' Night” at the Shirk Center on Saturday, February 19.

IWU improved to 17-7 overall and 8-5 in the league while North Park's season ends with a 10-15 mark and a 4-10 CCIW record.

The Titans trailed 13-8 with 13:25 to play in the first half before going on an 18-4 run to claim a 26-17 lead with 7:04 before halftime. IWU held on to a 39-33 lead after the first period.

North Park battled back to tie the game at 41-41 with 16:00 left in the contest and had a 47-46 lead with 11:23 to go before IWU went on am 8-0 run to gain a 54-47 lead with 8:11 left and led 62-52 with 4:59 to play.

Senior Sean Johnson scored a game-high 25 points while junior Jordan Zimmer and senior Doug Sexauer each had 12.

Illinois Wesleyan made 29 of 62 from the field (.468) and connected on nine of 27 3-point free tries (.333) while making only six of 13 free throws (.462),

The Vikings, who were led by the 14 point effort of Clayton Cahill, shot .417 (20 of 48) from the field and made six of 16 (.375) from beyond the 3-point arc. North Park made 11 of 17 free throws (.647).

The Titans held a 35-34 rebound advantage as Sexauer had a game-high nine boards. The Vikings committed 18 turnovers compared to 11 for the Titans and IWU had 34 points in the paint compared to 22 for North Park.

Illinois Wesleyan closes out its regular season with a must-win home game against No. 3-ranked Augustana at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The Vikings are 22-2 overall and 11-2 after a 50-46 loss at North Central.
