BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Senior
Jordan Zimmer hit on seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead the Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team to a 71-56 win over Washington U. at the Shirk Center on Saturday (Dec. 17).
The Titans improved to 7-2 while the Bears fell to 7-3 and had their five-game winning streak ended.
Sophomore
Victor Davis added 12 points with a team-high six rebounds for IWU while senior
John Koschnitzky scored 10.
Zimmer was seven-of-15 from 3-point range, including five in the first half. Illinois Wesleyan outrebounded Washington U. 39-31 in the contest and had an 18-9 advantage in second-chance points.
Zimmer's seven 3-pointers is tied for sixth most in an IWU single game as five other players share the record with eight.
Senior
Eliud Gonzalez had eight assists, following his 11-assist effort last weekend in a win at Chicago.
Illinois Wesleyan took its largest lead of the game at 55-37 with 12:18 remaining, before Washington U. mounted a mild comeback. The Bears got within seven points at 61-54 with 3:27 to play, but that would be as close as they would get.
Washington U. shot 40.0 percent (22-55) from the field in the loss and was limited to a season-low seven assists. The Bears committed 15 turnovers in the loss, including 11 in the second half. IWU admitted to 10 turnovers.
The Titans hit 24-of-57 from the field (.421) and made 10-of-27 from 3-point range (.370) along with 13 of 19 free throws (.684).
The Bears got a career-high 15 points off the bench from sophomore guard Alan Aboona while Brayden Teuscher and Dylan Richter each scored 13.
Illinois Wesleyan is idle until December 29 when they play Bethany College at 4 p.m. Central time in the College of Staten Island "Tournament of Heroes". The Bison are 10-0 and are also idle until then.
The next night, IWU will play either Vaughn or the host school for third place or the tourney title.
