BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team let a two goal lead get away in the final 15 minutes of regulation, then lost in overtime 3-2 to Carthage on Saturday (Oct. 29).
Illinois Wesleyan's season ends with an 8-8-1 record and a mark of 3-3-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Carthage (12-5-2, 5-1-1 CCIW) won at least a share of the conference title and will be the top-seeded team in the CCIW Soccer Tournament.
After a scoreless first period, Illinois Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the second half at 60:22 on the second goal of the year from
Angelo Catalano with assists from juniors
Danny Kenny and
Kyle Gorgol.
Gorgol scored his own tally, his ninth of the season, at 70:13 to make the score 2-0. Assists came from sophomore
Declan Geraghty and junior
Frank Marchiori.
Carthage got on the board when Dylan Tucker scored his first goal of the season at 76:49, assisted by Billy Hamilton, and the Red Men's Michael Dombrowski tied the game at 2-2 with a goal, his 10th of the year, at 85:43, assisted by Rafal Zalewski.
Carthage won the game with 45 seconds remaining in the overtime period when Greg Pignataro scored on a penalty kick.
The Titans had a 14-13 edge in shots over the Red Men.
Junior keeper
Tim Hegwood made one save in goal for IWU in the first 70:56 of the contest and sophomore
Andrew Reed made three saves in 28:19, allowing all three goals.
