BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan's volleyball team captured two wins in the Barker Chevrolet Classic III at the Shirk Center on Friday (Oct. 28). The Titans snapped their three-match, nine-set losing streak and improved to 16-14 with victories over North Park and Monmouth.
IWU defeated North Park by scores of 25-23, 25-15, 25-18, and handled Monmouth, 25-18, 26-28, 25-15, 28-26. The North Park contest was not a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match.
"The team did a nice job keeping their poise through both matches," said IWU head coach
Kim Nelson-Brown. "Our passing was fantastic which allowed us to run our offense effectively."
Junior
Katie Rhoades led the way against North Park (12-16) with team-highs of 14 kills and 14 digs. Junior
Alex Hill also had 14 kills and freshman
Cydnee Mann provided four blocks. Senior
Stacy Hassinger had 44 set assists.
In the set two loss to Monmouth (10-16), Illinois Wesleyan trailed the Scots by an 18-14 score and battled back to tie at the match at 20. Rhoades again led IWU with 19 kills while Mann added 11 with four blocks. Hill and junior
Rachel Soltwedel also had four blocks each and Hassinger had 49 assists.
Defensively, IWU got 21 digs from sophomore
Sarah Blum, 13 from junior
Stephanie Polich and 11 from Hassinger and freshman
Maddie Greybar.
On Saturday, Illinois Wesleyan hosts Indiana-Northwest at 10 a.m. and Anderson at 2:30 p.m.
