BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Senior Doug Sexauer scored a career-high 34 as the No. 20-ranked Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team survived with a 103-94 double overtime win over Carthage at the Shirk Center on Saturday, January 29.
The Titans (now 14-5 overall and 5-3 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) led by 18 at 54-36 with 15:53 to play in the game before a furious Carthage run allowed the red Men to tie the score at 76-76 with 45 seconds remaining. A basket by Sean Johnson put the Titans ahead 78-76 with 19 seconds left in regulation but a tip-in by Mitch Thompson sent the game into the first overtime with 1 second left.
Steve Djurickovic, who also finished with 34 points in the game, scored eight of his team's 10 points in the first overtime and the game remained tied at 88-88 heading into the second extra period.
Sexauer scored eight of the Titans' 15 points in the second overtime period as IWU scored the first seven points of the final five minutes.
The Titans shot 59.7 percent from the field (40 of 67) and connected on 17 of 26 free throw tries (65.4 percent). The Red Men shot 31.3 percent (33 of 78) from the field and made seven of 29 from the 3-point zone (24.1 percent). Carthage made 21 of 23 free throws (91.3 percent).
Illinois Wesleyan made six of 16 3-point tries (37.5 percent) and the Titans were outrebounded by the Red Men, 42-38. Both teams committed 11 turnovers.
John Koschnitzky added 21 for IWU and Johnson and junior Jordan Zimmer each scored 15. Koschnitzky and junior Ryan Connolly led IWU with seven rebounds each and Johnson handed out seven assists.
Malcom Kelly netted 23 and Tyler Pierce scored 17 for Carthage, who fell to 11-8 overall and 4-4 in the league.
