Five in Double Figures as Titans Beat Wheaton, 82-72

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Five players, led by junior John Koschnitzky with 19, scored in double figures as the Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team downed Wheaton, 82-72, at the Shirk Center on Jan. 19.

The No. 16-ranked Titans improved to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and the Thunder dropped to 11-5 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Junior Jordan Zimmer added 16 points while senior Matt Schick scored 14, senior Doug Sexauer contributed 12 points and senior Sean Johnson scored 11.

The score was tied 30-30 with 5:44 to go in the first half before IWU went on an 11-2 spree to go ahead 41-32. A late basket made the score at halftime 41-34 Titans.

The closest Wheaton got in the second half was three points when they trailed, 49-46, with 11:59 left in the game but the Titans went on a 13-4 run overthe ensuing four minutes to lead by 12 at 62-50 with 7:59 remaining.

The Titans held a decisive 39-29 rebound lead over the Thunder as Sexauer grabbed eight and moved into 21st place at IWU with 490 career boards. Illinois Wesleyan committed 16 turnovers to 11 for Wheaton.

The Thunder got four players in double figures, led by Jon DeMoss with 15. Andrew Jahns scored 14 and Tim McCrary had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Illinois Wesleyan made 26 of 50 from the field (52 percent) and connected on nine of 23 3-point free tries (39 percent) while making 21 of 29 free throws (72.4 percent).

The Thunder shot 43.3 percent (26 of 60) from the field and made only four of 17 (23.5 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. Wheaton made 16 of 23 free throws (69.6 percent).

Illinois Wesleyan will travel to Chicago to face North Park at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22.
