Titan Volleyball Sweeps Home Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team won all four of its matches in the Barker Chevrolet Classic I at the Shirk Center, defeating Benedictine and Concordia on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Freshman Stephanie Buhrow and junior setter Stacy Hassinger were named to the all-tournament team for the Titans.

Illinois Wesleyan defeated Benedictine, 25-16, 19-25, 26-28, 25-20, 15-7, and then handled Concordia, 25-15, 25-22, 27-25.

"Benedictine did a nice job taking us out of our system and challenging our left side," said IWU head coach Kim Nelson-Brown. "The team did a great job refocusing on our goals to pull out the match."

Against Benedi ctine, Buhrow had 21 kills while Gaby Johnson and Lori Johnson each had nine and Teresa Kirk had eight. Hassinger provided 45 assists and had 14 defensive digs and freshman Miya Thalmann led the team with 17 digs. Freshman Sarah Blum had 13 digs and Erin Wachtel had 12.

In the Condordia match, Buhrow made 12 kills and Hassinger had eight kills in nine attempts while giving out 31 set assists and making six digs. Lori Johnson and Kirk each had six kills. Kirk had 14 digs and Blum had 11 as Thalmann made eight defensive digs.

Illinois Wesleyan opens College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play on Tues., Sept. 14 against Elmhurst College at 7 p.m. at the Shirk Center.
