Baseball Pounds Out Win at Rockford, 16-6

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team had 15 hits with six doubles, a triple and a home run in a 16-6 nonconference win at Rockford College on Tuesday, May 4.

The Titans, who improved to 18-17 with the victory, scored three runs in the second and two in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings and had sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth, scoring seven runs after two were out.

Senior second baseman Brett Moore, sophomore Kevin Sullivan, junior Jeff Grodecki, senior Kraig Ladd, Mark McDermott and freshman Kevin Callahan each had two hits with Moore contributing a double and a triple with three runs batted in and Sullivan smacking a double and his third home run of the season with two RBI.

McIntosh extended his hitting streak to 23 games, the second best in school "modern day" history behind the 28-game streak by Mick Curran in 2005.

Sophomore Joe Sweeney (3-2) was the winning pitcher, going three innings and striking out seven while allowing no runs in relief of senior Joe Froelich, who went the first three and struck out four. The Lions touched senior Alex Tosi for four runs on four hits in their last at bat in the game shortened by the 10-run rule.

Rockford had won seven of its last eight games coming into the IWU game and fell to 24-11-1 with the loss. Third baseman Kyle Standridge had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 36 games, tied for the 10th longest streak in Division III baseball records.

The Titans, who have secured a berth in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin postseason tournament, next play a doubleheader Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. at CCIW-leading North Central, then host the Cardinals at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 9.
