Titans Lose First Game at DePauw, Finale Rained Out

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team was limited to three hits in an 8-0 loss to the No. 14-ranked DePauw Tigers in the first game of a scheduled nonconference doubleheader on Monday, May 3 in Greencastle, Ind. The second game was canceled due to rain.

Illinois Wesleyan is 26-13 overall and 9-5 in league play heading into the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament at Kenosha, Wis., this weekend.
No. 2-seed IWU opens the tourney at 10 a.m. Friday against No. 3-seed North Central (30-10 overall, 9-5 CCIW).
No. 1-seed Carthage plays No. 4-seed Augustana in the other opening round game of the double elimination tourney.

The Tigers (who improved to 34-5 with the win) scored two unearned runs in the third when Haley Buchanan reached on a fielding error by shortstop Allison Ward. Cymone Allen singled to shortstop and Rachel MacBeth singled to left field to load the bases. After Buchanan was forced out at home, Emma Minx singled through the right side to bring home Allen and Holly Paris reached on a fielder's choice that brought home MacBeth.

The Tigers scored six more in the sixth when Amy Hallett walked, Buchanan was hit by a pitch and Allen reached on a bunt single to load the bases. MacBeth singled up the middle to score Hallett, Brianne Weeks walked to score a run and Minx singled home another. Paris walked and Ashlee Anton singled to bring home runs and keep the bases loaded before Hallett singled home a run to end the game.

Ward had a first inning single, Stephanie Polich had a bunt single in the third and Christy Engel had an infield single in the sixth for the Titans' only hits against winning pitcher Megan Soults (23-4).

Engel (9-8) was the losing pitcher as she allowed 11 hits and walked five while striking out seven in six innings.

The second game was tied, 3-3, in the second inning when rain forced stoppage of play.
