BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan Titans split a pair of games against Augustana, winning the opener 9-4 and losing the second game 10-3 on Tuesday, April 6. IWU is 9-9 overall and 4-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Senior
Alex Tosi (2-3) was the winning pitcher, scattering 10 hits and striking out six in eight innings. The Titans had five hits, were outhit 11-5, but took advantage of four Augustana errors and seven walks.
After being held scoreless and with only one hit through the first five innings, Illinois Wesleyan scored in each of its final four at-bats in the first game.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, senior second baseman
Brett Moore walked to start a six-run Titan rally. Moore scored IWU's first run on a
Casey McIntosh fielder's choice. A walk and two Viking errors led to the next three Titan runs and the final two came home on a double by
Kevin Sullivan double and the third Viking error of the inning.
A run in the seventh drew Augustana to within 6-3, but IWU came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring another unearned run. A Viking home run in the eighth cut the lead to 7-4, but IWU got a two-run homer by Moore in the bottom of the eighth.
In game two, the Titans got singles from Moore, McIntosh, Sullivan,
Ryan Hopp and
Zach Scott.
Titan starter
Joe Froelich fell to 0-2 with the loss as he allowed eight hits and three runs in four innings, walking two and striking out three.
Dave Hoffman had five hits and four RBI, including his first home of the year, and Kurt Schmidt added three singles and a double as Augustana bounced back in game two behind freshman starter Jared McIntosh, who threw eight innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs, walking two and fanning five, to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Leading 3-1, the Vikings broke the game open off Titan reliever
Eric McCullough in the fifth with a lead off double by Nick Kujawa, who scored two batters later on an IWU error. After McCullough walked Tyler Bernal to load the bases, lefthander
Pat Hayn came on to face Serna, who drove in a run with a fielder's choice. Augustana got a run on a Titan error to push the lead to 6-1. Hoffman's RBI single drove in another and the fifth and final run of the inning scored when Schmidt was balked home.
The Titans play a 12 p.m. doubleheader at No. 20-ranked Carthage on Saturday, April 10, and a 12 p.m. single game against the Red Men on Sunday, April 11.
