Titans Lose to Division I Illinois State, 12-4

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The sixth Horenberger-Bass Classic was won by Illinois State, downing the Illinois Wesleyan Titans, 12-4, on Tuesday, April 27 at Horenberger Field.

IWU fell to 14-16 overall and the Division I Redbirds improved to 20-16. The crosstown rivalry game is named for former Illinois Wesleyan baseball and basketball coach and athletic director Jack Horenberger and former Illinois State head coach Duffy Bass. ISU leads the Horenberger-Bass Classic, 4-2, and has an 83-70 lead in the overall series that dates back to 1890.

The Titans trailed 7-0 after seven and a half innings before scoring all four of their runs in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Ryan Hopp was hit by pitch and was forced at second when sophomore catcher #E.J. Schiller reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman Zach Scott then singled to rightfield and Schiller advanced to second. Junior third baseman Jeff Grodecki doubled to left center to score two runs and came home when freshman Anthony Lopez singled to rightfield. Senior Brett Moore# hit s double to centerfield to score Lopez.

Senior lefthander Joe Froelich (0-3) took the loss, working the first six innings and striking out five while walking one, allowing nine hits and six earned runs.

Illinois Wesleyan hosts Concordia Chicago at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 29.
