BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Sophomore #E.J. Schiller# cracked a grand slam home run to end the game and the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team muscled up for four homers total in a 13-3 win over Monmouth at Horenberger Field on Wednesday night, April 21.
The Titans improved to 13-13 overall while the Fighting Scots fell to 9-18 this season.
After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first, IWU scored four in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Mike Morrissey walked and senior
Casey McIntosh clubbed a home run.
Ryan Hopp then singled and, with one out,
Mark McDermott hit a home run to put IWU ahead 4-3.
The Titans added one in the fourth and three more in the fifth when Morrissey reached on a bunt single before McIntosh hit his second homer of the game to left field. Hopp was hit by a pitch, stole second but was out when McDermott reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second before coming home when
Jeff Grodecki singled to center.
After tacking on a single run in the seventh to make the score 9-3, the Titans closed out the game with four in the ninth.
Kevin Sullivan led off with a single, Morrissey walked. With one out, Hopp walked to load the bases. After
Kevin Callahan popped up to the second baseman, Schiller cracked his game-winning home run.
Despite being touched for all the Monmouth runs,
Matt Caruso was the winning pitcher as he was the first of eight IWU hurlers used and was the pitcher of record when the Titans took the lead for good. Titan pitchers induced seven flyball outs, 11 groundball outs and got strikeouts from
Nick Mehn and
Joe Froelich.
IWU next hosts North Park Friday, April 23, in a 7 p.m. College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game and a 12 Noon doubleheader against the Vikings on Saturday, April 24.
