MOLINE, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team lost a 9-8 game in 10 innings to Augustana at Swanson/Brunner Stadium in Moline on Wednesday night, April 14.
The Titans fell to 10-12 overall and 5-4 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Augustana, who committed six errors in the win, improved to 15-8, overall and 3-6 in the CCIW.
IWU scored two in the second when, with one out, freshman shortstop
Anthony Lopez singled to right field and went to second on a
Kraig Ladd single to left.
Jeff Grodecki reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases before
Mike Morrissey singled home Lopez and Ladd.
The Titans tied the game at 4-4 in the third when designated hitter
Kevin Sullivan reached on an error by the third baseman to open the inning. After two fly outs, Sullivan stole second and scored on Lopez's single to left field. After Ladd reached on an error by the second baseman, Grodecki singled to left field to score Lopez.
IWU scored two in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Mark McDermott led off the fifth with a double and
Zach Scott walked. With one out, Ladd brought both runners in with a double to center field.
With two out in the sixth,
Ryan Hopp singled to center field and Sullivan reached on an error by the shortstop before McDermott tripled home both runners.
Senior
Alex Tosi started the game and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits. Sophomore
Pat Hayn turned in three scoreless innings of relief.
Anthony Kopp got one out in the bottom of the 10th before the Vikings scored the game-winning run on two hits.
IWU has a three-game series against Wheaton this weekend with a single game on the road Friday and a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Horenberger Field on Saturday.
