BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team earned wins over Fontbonne (2-1) and No. 15-ranked Washington U. (3-1) on Saturday, April 10, in the IWU Tournament.

In the opener, the Titans trailed 1-0 heading into the last of the seventh when Kris Lee led off with a double to right field and was pinch run for by Sam Rubright. With one out, freshman Stephanie Polich singled to shortstop and moved Rubright to third. Senior Christy Engel hit into a fielders choice that scored Rubright and moved Polich to third before senior Allison Ward singled to drive home Polich with the game winner.

Freshman Katie Bruins was the winning pitcher as she allowed four hits and struck out two in the complete game.

The Washington U. game was a pitchers' duel between Engel and Claire Voris. IWU scored first in the top of the sixth, as a double by Engel batted in a run to give IWU its first lead of the game. The Bears answered with an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning, as Ashton Hitchcock scored with two outs after shortstop Ward mishandled a ground ball by Voris.

IWU's leftfielder Jen Monaco singled with one out in the seventh, went to second on a walk by Lauren James. The Titans scored the game-winning run on the ensuing play with two outs, as second baseman Corissa Santos bobbled a ball bit by Lisa Narotsky allowing Monaco to score all the way from second base. Polich singled to load the bases, and IWU added an insurance run as James scored after an error by third baseman Ally Berenter.

James (4-0) picked up the win as she fanned four in 1 2/3 innings in relief of Engel, who struck out two and allowed four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Titans play a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader at Augustana on Sunday, April 11 as a makeup of a rainout earlier this week.
