ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan 2010 baseball season opened with a pair of losses to DePauw in games played at Washington U. in St. Louis. The Titans lost the opener, 4-1, and dropped the nightcap. 7-6, in 10 innings.
In the opener, catcher
Mark McDermott has two hits and designated hitter
Jeff Grodecki provided the only run batted in with a sixth inning single. Lefthander
Joe Froelich took the loss, allowing five earned runs in four innings of work. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out three.
Senior
Alex Tosi allowed one hit and struck out five in three innings of relief.
In the second game, McDermott had two more hits and three RBI, two coming on a two-run third inning home run. Senior third baseman
Casey McIntosh had three hits with a double and freshman first baseman
Kevin Callahan had two hits with a run batted in.
Senior righthander
Brent Kulavic pitched three innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs while walking four and striking out three. In five innings of relief,
Jason Pankau struck out seven and scattered six hits while walking only one. The Tigers got two runs off Pankau and one more off losing pitcher
Paul Kabbes, who allowed three hits and walked two while striking out one in one frame.
DePauw improved to 5-3 on the season.
The Titans and Tigers were to have played a doubleheader on Sunday, March 7, but those games have been cancelled. IWU's next action will be on March 13 against perennial Division III power Marietta on a neutral field in Memphis, Tenn.
