Box Score 4 KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Illinois Wesleyan improved to 3-1 on the early softball season with a pair of wins on Monday, March 15 at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. The Titans beat Hendrix, 5-2, before handing St. Norbert a 4-3 loss.
Against Hendrix, freshman
Katie Bruins scattered four hits, struck out three and walked one in earning her first collegiate pitching win.
The Titans took advantage of five errors by Hendrix, scoring three unearned runs. Senior second baseman
Lisa Narotsky got two hits and senior rightfielder
Christy Engel drove in two runs with a double. Freshman centerfielder
Stephanie Polich, senior shortstop
Allison Ward and sophomore third baseman
Amanda Murray also had RBI for Illinois Wesleyan.
Against St. Norbert, Engel was the winning pitcher as she allowed five hits and struck out six in the complete game.
The Titans got a pair of unearned runs in the first when Polich struck out but went all the way to second on a throwing errot by the catcher, then advanced to third on an error by the rightfielder. With one out, Ward singled to score Polich. After
Kris Lee was hit by a pitch and Bruins walked,
Jen Monaco singled to score Ward.
IWU added two more unearned runs on only one hit in the sixth as
Jaci Forsythe led off the inning with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on when Polich hit a ground ball the shortstop did not handle. Polich came around to score on a Narotsky ground out.
MARCH 14 RESULTS
The Illinois Wesleyan softball team opened its season with a win over Kean, 3-1, before losing to Wisconsin-River Falls, 4-0, at the Rebel Spring Games in the Orlando, Fla., area.
In the first game, freshman
Stephanie Polich had three hits to key the Titans in a 3-1 victory over Kean. Senior
Christy Engel added a pair of hits for IWU in the win while freshman
Alyssa Vorel pitched six innings, limiting Kean to no runs on three hits while striking out five, to pick up her first collegiate win.
In the nightcap, Engel struck out six and allowed three earned runs on five hits over six innings in the second game to absorb the loss. Senior
Allison Ward had two of the Titans' three hits.
The Titans' 10-game spring trip continues with games on Monday, March 15, against Hendrix and St. Norbert.
