MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team won its first game of the season, getting outstanding pitching from
Jason Pankau and taking advantage of porous defense to claim a 5-0 win at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., on March 14.
Pankau scattered seven hits and struck out nine while walking only three in seven innings. Scoreless innings were pitched by
Joe Froelich in the eighth and
Brent Kulavic in the ninth against the Lynx, who fell to 12-4.
The Titans, who took advantage of four Lynx errors, scored two runs in the first inning and added one more in the fifth and two in the ninth.
Mike Morrissey led off the game with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on an error by the rightfielder.
Casey McIntosh hit a sacrifice fly to center to knock home Morrissey. With two outs,
Kevin Callahan walked and
Kraig Ladd, who reached on the error, advanced to second. A single by
Mark McDermott drove home Ladd.
In the fifth
Ryan Hopp opened with a walk, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on an error and scored on a second McIntosh sacrifice fly.
A bases loaded ninth inning double by
Jeff Grodecki batted in Ladd and Morrissey gave the Titans some insurance runs.
IWU plays at Millsaps in Jackson,Miss., on March 16 and 17.
