Titans Earn NCAA Spot With CCIW Tournament Title

WHEATON, Ill. - In a battle of two top 10 teams, the Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team earned the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III tournament by winning a shootout, 3-1, following a 0-0 tie at Wheaton's Joe Bean Stadium on Sat., Nov. 6.

The Titans, who will be making their third straight and fourth all-time NCAA playoff appearance, have a record of 16-1-3 while Wheaton has an 18-2-1 record. It was the second straight match for the Titans to have a penalty kick shootout – the Titans and Augustana tied, 0-0, last Wednesday and IWU got a 5-4 penalty kick advantage.

The announcement of who, where and when Illinois Wesleyan will play in the NCAA tournament will be webstreamed live on NCAA.com at 8 a.m. Central time on Monday, November. 8.

The Titans' senior keeper Alli Novak was brilliant in goal in the championship match, making a school-record 18 saves as Wheaton held a 25-14 edge in shots. The previous match record for saves was 10, held by Novak in two games and Emily Castner.
In the penalty kick round, IWU got goals from seniors Alyssa Feulner and Carlie Hoekstra and freshman Tillie Bill to earn the advancement.

Wheaton, who has a 15 match unbeaten streak, was the tournament's No. 1 seed as it was the league's regular season champion, while IWU was the tournament's No. 2 seed.  During the regular season, Wheaton downed IWU by a 3-1 score in Bloomington and the Thunder now holds a 20-2-2 edge in the series against IWU.

This week, the Titans were ranked No. 9 in the national NSCAA/adidas poll and No. 7 in the D3soccer.com poll while Wheaton was No. 5 in the NSCAA/adidas poll and No. 4 in the D3soccer.com poll 

IWU has an overall record of 1-2-2 in NCAA Division III tournament play.
In the 2009 NCAA tournament the Titans earned their first-ever playoff win with a 1-0 overtime decision over Carroll before losing in overtime, 1-0 to Washington U.
In 2008, Illinois Wesleyan tied Rhodes, 0-0, but advanced in a 4-3 shootout advantage. In the second round IWU tied Washington U., 0-0, and were outscored, 3-1, in penalty kicks.
In the 2005 NCAA tournament, the Titans lost a 1-0 first round decision at Loras.
