IWU Volleyball Wins Twice in Home Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team picked up a pair of victories at the Barker Chevrolet II Classic on Oct. 1 at the Shirk Center. The Titans downed Albion, 3-2, and breezed past Robert Morris-Peoria, 3-0.

IWU won the fourth and fifth set against Albion in the tournament opener, claiming the match 18-25, 25-12, 22-25, 25-20, 15-6, then handled the Eagles, 25-7, 25-5, 25-13.

"I was pleased with how we rebounded after our first set loss to Albion," said IWU head coach Kim Nelson-Brown. "We had some moments that we really moved well together and came up with some great defensive digs. Tomorrow's match against Heidelberg will be a lot faster tempo and we'll need to be ready to make some adjustments."

Against Albion, senior Lori Johnson led the way with 16 kills while freshman Stephanie Buhrow had 13 kills and eight blocks, tied for sixth most in a five-set match at IWU. Sophomore Alex Hill had 11 kills and sophomore Eryn Finet had six kills, five blocks, and led the team with nine digs.
Junior setter Stacy Hassinger had 49 assists and freshman Sarah Blum also had nine digs.

In the win over Robert Morris-Peoria, senior Teresa Kirk had team-bests of 11 kills and six digs. Hill has six kills and five blocks and Johnson added five kills. Hassinger and freshman Kelsey Laugel led the way with 13 assists each.
