BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team survived a furious late rally to hold on and defeat Augustana, 71-64, at the Shirk Center on Jan. 27.
Sophomore
John Koschnitzky came off the bench to score 18 points and had a team-high six rebounds to lead the Titans, who improved to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Koschnitzky hit all four of his 3-point tries as the Titans made nine of 15 treys in the game, eight of nine in the first half.
Illinois Wesleyan led, 67-47, with 6:22 to play in the game but the Vikings reeled off 15 straight points to close to 67-62 before two free throws by junior
Sean Johnson with 44 seconds left ended the IWU scoring drought.
Johnson finished with 16 points and junior
Doug Sexauer added 15. Junior Edmond O'Callaghan grabbed five rebounds.
The Titans, who led 44-33 at halftime, shot 47 percent (27 of 57) from the field in the game and committed only 10 turnovers while forcing the Vikings into 18 turnovers.
Matt Pelton and Kyle Nelson each had 12 points for Augustana, who fell to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in the CCIW. Nelson had nine rebounds an Brandon Kunz had seven boards as Augustana outrebounded IWU, 32-28.
The Vikings shot 49 percent from the field (24 of 49) after starting the game making one out of their first 10.
