IWU Falls at Carthage; Wheaton Game Suspended

Box Score Illinois Wesleyan lost a slugfest, 16-11, at Carthage in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin baseball tournament on May 8 and trailed 5-2 in the fifth inning against Wheaton in a game suspended by darkness. The teams resume play at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In the 16-11 loss to the host school, the Titans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Kraig Ladd hit an RBI double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielding error. Carthage erupted for five runs in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead but the Titans came right back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to narrow the gap to 6-5. Sophomore third baseman Jeff Grodecki tripled and scored on a single by Bob Huppert. IWU loaded the bases, and rightfielder Mike Morrissey singled home a run, and Ladd followed with a ground out that scored a run.

Carthage made it 7-5 in the fifth but IWU took a 10-7 lead with a five-run sixth inning. Ladd hit an RBI single, and senior shortstop Tim Marzec followed with an RBI-double. Junior first baseman Casey McIntosh hit an RBI-double for the go-ahead run, and Grodecki added a two-run single. Carthage came back with a four-run seventh to regain the lead, 11-10 and Illinois Wesleyan tied the game, 11-11, in the seventh on an RBI double by Ladd, his fourth hit and fourth RBI of the game.

In the Carthage ninth, the Red Men loaded the bases with no outs off losing Titan pitcher Joe Froelich (5-3) and went on to plate five runs to account for the final score.
