IWU Takes Two of Three vs. Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team split with Augustana on Saturday, May 2, in Rock Island, losing a 9-8 decision before claiming a 9-3 win in the nightcap. The Titans are 23-13 overall and finish 14-7 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular season phase.
The Vikings are 23-15, 10-10 CCIW.

IWU jumped off to a seven-run first inning in the second game. Brett Moore singled and, with one out, Kraig Ladd singled and Kevin Goshorn walked. Jeff Grodecki was hit by a pitch to send home Moore and Pat Kirchhofer singled to score Ladd. Charlie Capozzoli then doubled home a pair of runs and Mark McDermott singled home Kirchhofer scored. Another run scored when Tim Marzec reached on an error and Moore then doubled to left to score McDermott.
Paul Kabbes was the winner, going five innings and striking out six. Kirchhofer added a solo home run and pitched two scoreless innings and Goshorn worked the final two innings in relief.

The Titans trailed 8-3 in the ninth inning of the first game before scoring five to tie the issue at 8-8 before allowing a run in the bottom of the ninth. Grodecki started the ninth inning scoring rally by reaching on a third baseman error. Kirchhofer singled to right field thezecn was forced at second by Marzec. With runners at the corners, Moore singled home Grodecki. Mike Morrissey batted in Marzec with a single before Ladd hammered a three-run home run to right center.

FRIDAY, MAY 1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Alex Tosi struck out nine in seven innings and Geoff Page fanned four in the final two as Illinois Wesleyan took a 6-3 conference win over Augustana on May 1.
IWU broke a scoreless tie with a two-run Casey McIntosh home run in the second and added one more in the third when Marzec scored on a groundout after a leadoff double.
Wesleyan got three in the fifth when Pat Garvey walked, Marzec singled and Moore singled home Garvey. Mike Morrissey reached on a fielder's choice to drive home Marzec, then advanced to second on an error by the first baseman. Moore scored when Ladd grounded out to the second baseman.
Tosi improved to 3-0 as Page notched his second save.
