Titans Lose at Wheaton, Benedictine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team allowed 10 runs in the seventh inning in a 10-5 loss at Wheaton in a conference game on April 29. The Titans then traveled to meet nonleague Benedictine in the evening, losing by a 12-2 score.

The Titans fell to 21-12 overall and 12-6 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Thunder improved to 20-15 overall and also 12-6 in the CCIW. Benedictine upped their record to 17-18.

Against the Thunder, the Titans scored twice in the third when Brett Moore reached on an error by the third baseman and advanced to second. Kraig Ladd singled home Moore, then stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Ladd came home on a Kevin Goshorn sacrifice fly.

The Titans added a run in the fifth when Moore led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Mike Morrissey.

A home run to lead off the sixth by Casey McIntosh gave IWU a 4-0 lead and McIntosh also drove home a run in the seventh. Moore and McIntosh each had three hits while Ladd and Jeff Grodecki each had two hits as IWU outhit the Thunder, 13-9.

Jason Pankau pitched 6 1/3 innings and struck out five while allowing six hits. Marty Roche (0-2) was the losing pitcher, going only 2/3 of an inning and allowing five runs on three hits and a walk.

The Titans got three of their seven hits and their only two runs in the first inning against Benedictine. With one out, Morrissey, M singled and went to third on a Ladd single down the rightfield line. Goshorn doubled down the leftfield line to score Morrissey and send Ladd to third. Tim Marzec drove in Ladd with a sacrifice fly.

Joe Sweeney was the losing pitcher as none of three IWU pitchers was effective, allowing 18 hits and walking eight.
