Titans Split With Red Men in One-Run Games

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team got outstanding pitching in earning a doubleheader split with Carthage on April 11. The Titans (16-8, 8-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost the first game 3-2 when Carthage scored three runs in the ninth, before winning 1-0 in game two.

Lefthander Joe Froelich (4-2) pitched 8 1/3 innings in the first game, allowing only two hits while striking out eight and walking four. The Titans scored one in the second and one in the seventh to lead 2-0 before Carthage (17-5 overall, 10-1 CCIW) plated three in the ninth. Bob Huppert had IWU's only run batted in.

Starter Alex Tosi (2-0) scattered seven hits and struck out four in the second game and Paul Kabbes struck out six hitters in two innings of relief to claim the save. IWU made the most of its six hits and score its lone run in the second inning with two outs. Huppert reached on an error by the Carthage third baseman, went to second when Pat Kirchhofer drew a walk and scored when Pat Garvey singled to right field.

IWU will make up a game at North Central at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14.
