IWU Men Lose 76-71 to No. 1 Washington U.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan Titans lost a 76-71 decision to No. 1 ranked Washington U. in the championship game of the 2009 Tip-Off Tournament.

The Titans fell to 3-1 with the loss were led by the 17 points of junior guard Travis Rosenkranz while Doug Sexauer added 12, Sean Johnson scored 11 and sophomore Jordan Zimmer chipped in with 10. Junior Edmond O'Callaghan had a game-high 12 rebounds as the teams were even at 33-33 on the boards.

The Titans, who led by seven at 14-7 before Washington U. tied the game at 16-16, trailed by five, 37-32, at the half, and the Bears held the lead until the game was tied at 57-57 with 8:41 left on two Zimmer free throws. The Titans then went ahead 60-57 when Zimmer completed a conventional three-point play with 7:53 to play. The Titans led for the final time at 64-63 with 5:43 to play before Washington U. outscored IWU, 13-7, the remainder of the game.

The Titans shot 41 percent from the field (26 of 63) and connected on six of 23 3-pointers (26 percent) while the Bears shot 54 percent from the field (27 of 50) and made six of 21 treys. (29 percent).

Aaron Thompson scored 31 points to lead the 2-0 Bears, who are the two-time defending NCAA Division III champion. Thompson and Sean Wallis of the Bears were joined on the all-tournament team by Illinois Wesleyan's Sexauer, Lamonte Thomas of Johnson & Wales and Pat Pellerite of Ohio Wesleyan.

Illinois Wesleyan will next host Manchester at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29.
