Box Score 4 OSHKOSH, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team finished 1-3 at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh "Titan Tussle" on Oct. 16-17. The Titans beat Lakeland, 3-0, on Saturday before losing to St. Catherine, 3-0.
On Oct. 17, the Titans (now 16-12 overall) defeated Lakeland College, 3-0 (25-21, 28-26, 25-23) before losing to the College of St. Catherine, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-19).
"For the past month we have struggled with consistency," said IWU coach Kim Nelson-Brown. "Unfortunately this weekend we were not only inconsistent, we lacked confidence, energy and pride. I truly hope we can regain our focus and confidence quickly as we enter the last couple of weeks of our season."
The Titans tangle next on Tuesday, Oct. 20, with No. 6-ranked Carthage in a 7 p.m. conference match at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
In the win over Lakeland, senior Amy VanDerVoorn had a team-high 10 kills while senior Emily Hagen and sophomore Gaby Johnson each had nine and Lori Johnson had eight. Senior Jackie Wrobel led IWU with 12 defensive digs and VanDerVoorn had 10. Sophomore Stacy Hassinger provided 25 set assists.
Against St. Catherine, Hagen had nine kills and four blocks and Lori Johnson had six kills and two blocks. IWU's hitting percentage was .150 in the three-set loss. Hassinger had 28 assists and Wrobel made eight digs.
DAY ONE RECAP
IWU dropped the match to Bethel (Minn.) by scores of 16-25, 25-17, 18-25, 29-27, 14-16, then lost to Luther, 17-25, 20-25, 21-25.
"I felt the team fought hard in our first match but came out extremely flat in the second," said Nelson-Brown. "We have to find a way to compete every point, not intermittently."
In the loss to Bethel, Hagen paced IWU with 14 kills and five blocks, VanDerVoorn made 11 kills and had 13 digs and Lori Johnson had 10 kills. Hassinger had 42 set assists and made 13 defensive digs and Wrobel had a team-high 22 digs.
Against Luther, Hagen had nine kills and two blocks, Gaby Johnson had six kills and VanDerVoorn made five. Lori Johnson had four kills and four blocks and Hassinger led the team with 28 assists and 11 digs.
