Former Illinois Wesleyan tennis player and team captain Krista Cardona became the women's tennis coach at IWU in May 2007 and was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin "Coach of the Year" in 2008.
In three seasons, Cardona’s teams have compiled an overall record of 14-42 (.250 winning percentage) and 9-9 in the CCIW (.500) with a third place finish in 2008 and fifth place finishes in 2007 and 2009.
Cardona has coached four all-CCIW honorees, including Helen Alex in 2009.
Cardona, whose maiden name is Vogel, lettered in tennis for four years (from 1999 to 2002) and amassed a career singles record of 46-29 (.613). Her 46 wins is tied for 13th most in an IWU women’s tennis career.
She was the 2002 team’s “Most Improved Player” as she placed second at No. 4 singles in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet. She also got fourth at No. 3 singles in 1999 and third in No. 3 doubles in the 2001 CCIW meet.
A Bloomington native, Cardona graduated from IWU in 2003 with a degree in political science and later worked for the Illinois House of Representatives and later for State Farm Insurance.
At IWU, Cardona was active in Student Senate, Model United Nations, various student political organizations and spent a semester in San Juan, Puerto Rico studying Spanish.
As a tennis player at Bloomington High School, Cardona was an all-stater as a senior, had a career singles record of 26-6 and a career doubles mark of 42-38.
Krista, who has worked at Illinois Wesleyan as a full-time admissions counselor since 2006, and her husband Alex reside in Bloomington and are the parents of a daughter, Mariella, born Oct. 17, 2009.
