SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16
GAME ONE - TRINITY (TEXAS) 3, AUGUSTANA (ILL.) 1
In rainy and muddy conditions, No. 2-ranked Trinity University (22-0-1) outscored Augustana, 3-1, under the lights at Neis Field Saturday (Nov. 16) in the first round of the NCAA Division III national championship tournament.
After Trinity goalkeeper Devan Osegueda mishandled the ball, Augustana’s Somer Druszkowski tapped the ball in, putting the Vikings ahead, 1-0, in the 26th minute. But the rest of the scoring belonged to the Tigers.
Nearly 10 minutes later, the Tigers’ Shelby Guenthardt scored from right in front of the keeper to even out the score, 1-1, with 36:13 on the clock.
In the 41st minute, Kelsey Falcone knocked a header to Guenthardt, who got it right past the goalie, extending Trinity’s lead, 2-1.
Following halftime and a 30-minute lightning delay, Falcone scored in the 81st minute to draw the score to 3-1.
GAME TWO - ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 3, TRANSYLVANIA 0
The Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team (13-2-5) won its first-round match in the NCAA Division III national tournament, taking a 3-0 decision over Transylvania at IWU's Neis Field on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Titans will face No. 2-ranked Trinity (Texas) in a 5 p.m. showdown at Neis Field on Sunday, Nov. 17.
The Titans scored early as freshman Sydney Fox scored an unassisted blast past Transylvania keeper Jerrica Scovell from the top of the box at the 4:03 mark for her fifth goal of the year.
Senior Tillie Bill made the score 2-0 at 34:55 on an unassisted goal, tapped in after a blocked save by the keeper.
Bill added her second goal of the game (and 10th of the season) on a wide open shot at 72:37 with assists from Emily Johnson and senior Kristina Dolak to provide the final 3-0 margin.
Illinois Wesleyan outshot the Pioneers, 19-2, and fired 10 shots on goal to one for Transylvania. IWU senior keeper Zoie Samaan turned in the shutout, her sixth of the season, with one save while Scovell made seven saves.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 10:30 A.M.
GAME THREE - TRINITY (TEXAS) 1, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 1 (Trinity advances 5-4 in shootout)
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The NCAA Division III women's soccer second round game between Illinois Wesleyan and Trinity University (Texas) concluded in a 1-1 tie, and was decided on penalty kicks, 5-4, in the Tigers' favor early Monday (Nov. 18) afternoon at Neis Field.
After two overtimes, the No. 14-ranked Titans (13-2-6) were outdone by the No. 2-ranked Tigers (22-0-2) during the first round of penalty kicks, ending IWU's postseason run. The Titans finished the 2013 season with a 9-0-3 record on their home pitch.
After a scoreless first half in regulation play, Illinois Wesleyan struck first as senior Tillie Bill headed the ball across the left side to connect with the back of the net in the 72nd minute, assisted by sophomore forward Sydney Fox, to put the score at 1-0.
The Tigers followed suit with 81:54 on the clock when Emily Jorgens also knocked a header back, assisted by Kelsey Falcone. The goal was Jorgens' 18th of the season.
Jorgens also made the decisive penalty kick for Trinity. Shelby Hopkins, Michelle Lanier, Yasmeen Farra and Kimberly Polasek also connected in the PK round.
Fox, Bill, Mary Kate Schmidt and Ashley Montijo made the shootout penalty kicks for the Titans.
Trinity had an 18-4 edge in shots with 14 shots on goal to two for IWU. Titan senior keeper Zoie Samaan made 12 total saves in 110 minutes, several on acrobatic plays that halted scoring chances.
Trinity heads back home and will host the NCAA Sectional round and will play against Montclair State (20-0-1) on Nov. 22 at McGinley Soccer Field in San Antonio, Texas. The Wheaton Thunder (19-4-2) will take on Emory (16-3-1) in the other round of 16 match at that site.
