Bell Saves three match points to secure sweep

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- The Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team defeated Millikin University 7-0, Wednesday night, Sept. 16. The Titans improve to 2-2 (1-1 CCIW) while Millikin slides to 3-5 (0-2 CCIW).

The Titans claimed the top-two doubles flights with seniors Amber Ehrlich (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) and Olivia Bell (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) winning over Rachel Combs and Braxtyn Madison, 6-2. Freshman Alassea Michel (Dunlap, Ill.-Dunlap) and junior Katie Van Heuklon (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) took down Sarah Parsons and Addison Ross, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles to book the doubles point.

In singles, IWU gained a 2-0 lead with Michel's 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 over Isabella Griffiths. Van Heuklon followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Maria Katalina Gomez Jerez on court three. Sophomore Adia Douglas (Flossmoor, Ill.-Homewood Flossmoor) clinched the win on court six, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Parsons. Fellow sophomore Elana Religioso (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet Seymour) defeated Ross 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, increasing the lead to 5-0. At the top singles spot, Ehrlich extended the IWU lead, winning 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 over Combs. Bell rounded out the singles slate with a three-hour marathon, coming back from down three match points in the second set to secure the sweep, defeating Madison 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-8 at No. 5 singles.

The Titans continue their conference slate, Saturday, Sept. 19 at Evergreen Racquet Club against North Park University. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
