Softball Stymied at DePauw

Titans see win streak snapped at 10

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team was upended in both ends of its final doubleheader of the regular season at DePauw University Thursday evening, April 30. The Titans (25-13) held leads in both games but were ultimately tamed by the Tigers (22-14) as their win streak was halted at 10.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 3, DePauw 7
The visitors put up two runs in the first inning to take the early lead. Sophomore Kelsey Bartels (Downs, Ill.-Tri-Valley) walked and came around to score on senior Casey Wissmiller's (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) first career triple. Senior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) followed with another extra-base hit, bringing home Wissmiller on a double to left.

The Tigers used runs in the bottom half of the first and third to level the game at two into the fourth, where the Titans reclaimed the lead. Once again sparked by a base on balls, sophomore Jillian Bollard (Roselle, Ill.-Saint Viator) walked to open the frame. Freshman Paige Veller (Buffalo Grove, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) entered to pinch run and was bunted to second before scooting into third on an error. Junior Annika Brown (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) drove an RBI single to center to push IWU back in front, 3-2.

The edge was short-lived as DePauw recorded a run-scoring single to tie the game at three. The Tigers sent the Titans down in order in the fifth and followed with a four-run inning. DU's big inning came on the back of two hits, one error, and four walks as the home team took control, 7-3.

Illinois Wesleyan mustered two baserunners via walks in the sixth and seventh innings but could not generate any further offense as the Green and White was upended, 7-3. The loss snapped IWU's 10-game win streak.

The Titans were outhit 7-3 in the contest, while both teams made two errors. Wissmiller and Brown each went 1-for-3 with one run driven in.

Senior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) started in the circle and lasted the first four innings. She was tagged for three runs, two earned, on five hits before making way for junior Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville). Holland, who was sacked with the loss, was dinged for four runs on two hits and a pair of walks. Sophomore Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) threw the final two innings, notching the game's lone strikeout without allowing a hit.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 10, DePauw 11
Similar to game one, Illinois Wesleyan plated runs in its first opportunity at the plate, this time going for four on four hits and an error. Sophomore Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) singled and Bartels reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Wissmiller loaded the bases with a base knock to center as Post stepped to the plate with nobody out and smashed a 1-1 offering to the outfield to bring in two. Bollard tacked on a sacrifice fly and freshman Isabella Boskey (Huntley, Ill.-Huntley) singled to catapult the Titans ahead, 4-0.

After DePauw broke the shutout with a run in its half of the first, IWU responded with two runs in the third. Post poked a leadoff single to right and two batters later, Boskey clubbed her fourth home run of the season to claim a five-run cushion, 6-1.

The Tigers scored in each of the next three innings to turn the tables, taking a 7-6 lead into the sixth. DU scored two in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the fifth to grab its first lead of the game. Sophomore Ella Hermes (Peru, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) worked around a baserunner in the sixth to keep IWU within striking distance into the seventh.

Wissmiller singled up the middle to start the late-inning rally and Post doubled to left-center to put two in scoring position with one out. Bollard battled back in the count to draw the game even, 7-7, with an RBI single up the middle. Digging into the right-handed batter's box, Pool made the most of a pinch-hit chance as she belted a three-run shot to push Illinois Wesleyan in front, 10-7. A popup halted the inning but not before the Green and White manufactured four runs on four hits to extend the game.

A pinch-hit single followed by a double got the Tigers roaring in the bottom half of the inning as Hermes' day ended with Holland taking over in the circle. A wild pitch brought home DU's first run of the inning and a single clawed DePauw back within one, 10-9. After a strikeout seemed to settle things, back-to-back wild pitches and an error knotted the game at 10-all. DePauw completed the comeback with a walk-off single to stun IWU, 11-10.

The Green and White churned out 11 hits in the contest, with Post and Boskey leading the charge with 3-for-4 showings. Boskey and Pool totaled a team-high three RBIs each, while Wissmiller added a multi-hit game.

Senior Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) started the game and went three and a third. She allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits and four walks but came away with a no decision. Freshman Hannah Burns (Charlestown, Ind.-Charlestown) tossed one innings in relief and Hermes went 1.2 frames, while Holland was the pitcher of record.

Illinois Wesleyan will look to regroup before returning to action as host of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Thursday-Saturday, May 7-9, at Inspiration Field. The full schedule, including matchups, will be finalized following this weekend's games around the league.
