Men’s Golf Opens CCIW Championship in Dominating Fashion

Castro tops individual leaderboard following five-under, 67

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team took a commanding lead after the opening round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship Wednesday, April 29. Following a four-under par 284 team score, the Titans lead by 17 strokes over North Park University and Augustana College at the par 72, 7039-yard Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Ill.

Sophomore Pablo Castro (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) tops the individual leaderboard, recording just one bogey in 18 holes. The sophomore posted a five-under round of 67, which included six birdies on the day. 

Senior Michael Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill.-Hinsdale Central) and freshman Ryan Andrews (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) carded matching scores of even-par (72) to sit in a tie for third-place, five strokes behind Castro. Senior Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) also ranks in the top-five following an opening round one-over par, 73. Bai is currently in a tie for fifth-place. 

The Titans lead North Park and Augustana by 17 strokes, as each carded a score of 301. North Park's Alexander Remahl is in solo second-place on the individual leaderboard following a one-under 71, four strokes behind Castro.

Round two of the 54-hole championship is set for tomorrow April 30. Senior Aidan Healy (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way West) will be first on the tee for the Titans at 10:30 a.m. Live scoring can continue to be followed here.
