Men’s Lacrosse Makes Trip to Augie

Titans battle Vikings at 7 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team will travel to Augustana College for a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin contest Wednesday, April 22. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Thorson-Lucken Field. 

Illinois Wesleyan (9-5, 2-1 CCIW) enters the midweek matchup off a 12-9 loss to Carthage College Saturday, April 18, the Titans first conference loss since 2017. Junior Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) led the team with four points by way of three goals and an assist. Sophomore Owen Miller (Brookfield, Wis.-Brookfield Central) also tallied a team-best three goals, while senior Noah Dretzka (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine) notched a team-high two assists. Senior Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) scooped up a team-leading seven ground balls to go along with an 11-of-14 showing at the X. Seniors Billy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) and Sam Scott (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) led the defense with six caused turnovers and 16 saves, respectively, as each totaled new career-highs. 

Overall, Timothy McHugh leads the team with 54 points, aided by 29 goals and 25 assists, also team-highs. Junior Nate Pound (Theinsville, Wis.-Homestead) is tied for second on the squad with 26 points, while his nine assists rank third. Miller is tied with Pound in points behind 18 goals and eight assists. Junior Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) sits second in goals with 21, closely followed by 20 from freshman Holden Webster (Centennial, Colo.-Arapahoe). Sophomore Charlie Burghardt (Milwaukee, Wis.-Brookfield Central) is second in assists with 16 helpers on the season.

With 53 ground balls, sophomore Jaymeson Zackery (Saint Paul, Minn.-Eastview) tops the team. Senior Karsten Nordlie (Roscoe, Ill.-Hononegah Community) and Rocco closely trail with 52 and 51 ground balls, respectively. Rocco leads the Green and White at the X this season, having gone 116-of-200, good for a .580 win percentage. Sophomore Matt Arnold (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) has added a 74-of-136 mark, owning a .544 win rate.

Defensively, IWU enters the bout with the second-highest caused turnovers per game average in Division III, averaging 15.36 per contest. Billy McHugh leads the way with 35. Nordlie is tied with fellow senior Kaden Gammelgaard (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich) for second, as each has recorded 19 caused turnovers. 

In goal for the Green and White, Zackery has made 136 saves across 708:13 minutes between the pipes. The sophomore brings in a 9-5 record and a .531 save percentage. Scott is second with 27 saves in 116:47 minutes between the iron, owning a .659 mark.

IWU will meet Augie (3-10, 0-3 CCIW) for the 14th time with the Titans holding an 11-2 advantage in the series all-time. Most recently, Illinois Wesleyan downed the Vikings, 23-3, April 6, 2024. Now-assistant coach Ike Eastburn turned in a team-leading four goals, and tied for the team-high in points with four alongside Gage Black and Andrew Ortega. Rocco scooped up a team-best six ground balls, while Zo Lombardo won a game-high 10 faceoffs. Sam Skelton led the defense with three caused turnovers, and Alex Oximana made a team-leading eight saves in goal. Augustana most recently fell at Carroll University, 16-4, Saturday, April 18.
