Titans Drop Series Finale at North Central

Baseball snags two-out-of-three from Cardinals

NAPERVILLE, Ill.- The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell in the series finale against North Central College, 11-5, at Zimmerman Stadium Sunday, April 19. IWU drops to 12-18 on the year and 7-6 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. North Central improves to 17-15 and climbs back to .500 (8-8) in league play

Sophomore Danny Johnson (Chicago, Ill.-St Ignatius) appeared in his first game of the year, taking the mound first. He gave up six runs, four earned, over his two innings. Freshman Myles Hammond (Lakewood, Ill.-Shelbyville) took the ball next and went two innings letting up a pair of runs. Sophomore Cade Addis (Fairbury, Ill.-Praire Central) threw the rest of the way allowing three runs, none of them earned. He struck out one and issued one walk.

Senior Jack Flagg (Oak Park. Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) provided the offense for IWU with three runs batted in, including two solo home runs. Flagg carded three hits, while sophomore Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) provided two hits, a walk, and two RBI's.

North Central loaded the bases in the first with no outs. A pair of walks and a single set up bases loaded, as the Cardinals capitalized on an error to plate the first score. A single through the left side resulted in two more runs and another scored thanks to a throwing error. Johnson buckled down to get the next two to limit the damage.

The Titans cut the lead in half in the second on a bases loaded single from Hudik to drive in a pair. The Cardinals answered with two of their own as a routine single turned into a run scored on the Titans' third error of the game. Another single pushed the NCC lead to four, 6-2.

Flagg started the third with a solo shot to left but IWU left the bases loaded after a single, walk. and a hit by pitch resulted in a fly out to center.

More action for North Central started in the fourth, as consecutive singles set up shop. A double play erased a runner and put two outs on the board, but a triple and a wild pitch made it 8-3.

Junior Jack Novak (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) added a run on his second home run of the week in the top of the fifth. Flagg launched his second homer of the day in the seventh to cut the lead to three.

More errors plagued Illinois Wesleyan in the eighth, as NCC piled on three runs on three hits with two errors to make it 11-6. The Green and White relied on Flagg to provide another run with a single into left, but double play and a fly out ended the comeback as North Central secured the win.

IWU will stay in CCIW play Tuesday, April 21, as it welcomes Wheaton College to Horenberger Field. First pitch under the lights will be thrown at 6 p.m.
