Softball Overpowers Elmhurst on the Road

Titans jump to 11-1 in CCIW play

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team left Elmhurst, Ill. with two run-rule shutouts Saturday, April 18, as the Titans outscored the Bluejays 20-0 on the day. The Green and White powered to a 12-0 win in game one before completing the sweep, 8-0. IWU bolsters its record to 21-11 overall and 11-1 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with the wins. EU plummets to 6-19 on the season, 1-5 in league play, with the losses.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 12, Elmhurst 0 (5 inn.)
Illinois Wesleyan plated three runs before an out was recorded in game one. Sophomore Grace Wilkens' (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) speed forced an errant throw and senior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) walked to put the first two batters aboard. Senior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) followed with a gutsy at bat that saw the power hitter work back from down 0-2. Battling in a 10-pitch at bat, Wissmiller fouled off three straight pitches before smashing a 2-2 offering over the left-center fence for a 3-0 lead. Senior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) and sophomore Bella Pinter (La Moille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) drew back-to-back walks but a lineout and back-to-back groundouts kept the Titans from tacking onto their lead.

Senior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) made quick work of the Bluejays, striking out the side, to send IWU right back to the plate.

After two errors brought another run across, Beckman laced a single up the middle to score another. With Beckman on third, Post drove a sacrifice fly to left-center to extend the lead to 6-0 with two outs in the second.

Certa fanned her fourth straight batter before Elmhurst broke through with a single. The base knock was wiped off the board as Beckman caught a popup and completed the double play with a throw to first.

Small ball led to another run for the Titans, with freshman Isabella Boskey (Huntley, Ill.-Huntley) drawing a four-pitch walk to lead off the third. Sophomore Julia Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) bunted her over to second and junior Annika Brown (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) singled down the left field line to put runners on the corners. Sophomore Riley McDoniel (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) put down a successful squeeze to drive in Boskey and bolster the lead, 7-0.

Beckman doubled down the right-field line to start the fourth. Wissmiller followed with an RBI single up the middle, putting the game in run-rule territory, 8-0. Boskey singled up the middle and Brown doubled to push the lead to double-digits, 10-0. Junior Margo Geary (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) took advantage of a pinch-hit opportunity, whacking a two-run knock up the middle.

Certa dialed up two more punchouts and a lineout to send the game to the fifth with IWU in control, 12-0.

Certa's day ended with four scoreless innings. She limited the Bluejays to two hits with a season-high eight strikeouts before sophomore Ella Hermes (Peru, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) faced the minimum in the fifth.

IWU's 10 hits were spread amongst seven players, with Beckman, Wissmiller, and Brown registering two hits apiece. Wissmiller drove in a team-best four, with Geary reeling in two RBIs.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 8, Elmhurst 0 (5 inn.)
Grace Wilkens wore a 1-0 pitch, swiped second, and moved to third on a groundout. Wissmiller lifted a sacrifice fly to right center to bring in the game's first run. Post doubled and scooted into third on a passed ball, where sophomore Jillian Bollard's (Roselle, Ill.-Saint Viator) single to right center upped the lead, 2-0.

The Green and White plated four more in the third, with Beckman leading off with a single. Wissmiller capitalized on another RBI situation, pushing a double into the left-center gap to score Beckman. After a groundout increased the lead, Bollard singled and Julia Wilkens reached on an error.

After a leadoff single by Bollard, Brown and McDoniel tacked on RBIs as IWU moved ahead, 8-0, midway through the fifth.

Senior Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) wrapped up the run-rule win emphatically, sending all three batters down swinging to end the game. Tossing the final three innings, Gatchell earned the win. She faced 12 batters, fanning six, and scattering three hits. Junior Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) started the game and went 2.0 innings with just one hit allowed.

At the plate, the Titans churned out 11 hits with Bollard leading the way with a 3-for-3 effort. Wissmiller drove in two in a 1-for-2 performance.

Illinois Wesleyan enjoys a week off before returning to action for its final four conference games Saturday-Sunday, April 25-26, at Inspiration Field. The Titans will host Carroll University Saturday, April 25, for a 1 p.m. first pitch. IWU will celebrate the 2016 team in honor of the 10-year anniversary of the squad's World Series appearance. The Green and White will then host Carthage College Sunday, April 26.
