Titans stay in Bloomington for four-game homestand

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell victim to Carthage College, 15-3, in seven innings in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin contest Sunday, April 12 at Horenberger Field. IWU falls to 8-17 (4-5 CCIW), while Carthage takes both games this weekend and improves to 10-16 and 3-7 in league play.

The Illinois Wesleyan offense churned out eight hits with sophomore Trey Schilling (Lincoln, Ill.-Lincoln Community) leading the way off the bench with two. Junior Patrick Carmody (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) picked up two runs batted in on a double down the left field line in the sixth to pace the Titans in the RBI category.

Carthage took advantage of four walks in the top of the first to place a three-spot on the board. A bases loaded free pass brought in the first run of the game and a perfectly placed bunt scored another.

Illinois Wesleyan strung together a trio of hits starting with a beautiful two-out bunt from senior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) in the bottom of the second. Senior Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) followed with a shot into right, moving Wolfe to third. With runners at the corners, sophomore Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) replicated Wolfe's bunt with one of his own, beating the throw at first to score a run and pull IWU within two, 3-1.

The Firebirds busted the game wide open in the third connecting on five home runs in the inning, including back-to-back-to-back shots to grow the lead to 9-1. An inning later CC's Michael Ossenfort blasted his second home run of the day to bolster the lead to double digits. The Firebirds mustered up two more runs in the fifth and another in the seventh to cap the scoring.

The Green and White begin a big four-game week starting Tuesday, April 15 against Benedictine University. First pitch from Horenberger field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
