One Up, One Down for Softball at Augie

Titans host North Park tomorrow, April 11

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team saw its unblemished start to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play disrupted Friday, April 10, with a split at Augustana College. The Titans (15-11, 5-1 CCIW) took game one 5-3 in extras but were blanked 5-0 by the Vikings (6-13, 1-3 CCIW) in game two. It marked IWU's first league loss since 2024, snapping a streak of 21 straight.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 5, Augustana 3 (8 inn.)
Sophomore Grace Wilkens' (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) walk set IWU's run-scoring inning in motion. With the leadoff batter on third and one out, senior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) put a ball in play to bring home the first run. Senior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) singled to keep the inning going and sophomore Bella Pinter (La Moille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) followed with an RBI single to push the Titan lead to two. Beckman and Pinter then teamed up to plate another run with Pinter drawing a throw down and Beckman scampering home safely to cap off the top of the first.

The Titans rode their three-run first into the sixth, where the Vikings tied the score. After a two-run homer, Augie knotted the game at three all with an RBI single.

Senior Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) took to the circle in the seventh, relieving Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North). After running into some early trouble, Gatchell held off Augie's walk-off attempt with a pop out to strand bases loaded.

Illinois Wesleyan's offense went to work in extras, springing for two runs on two hits and an error. Freshman Isabella Boskey (Huntley, Ill.-Huntley) came through with a sacrifice fly and Grace Wilkens brought home another run to lift the Titans to a 5-3 advantage.

Augustana did not have a chance in the bottom of the eighth as Gatchell tossed a 1-2-3 frame with three straight strikeouts to slam the door.

Both teams finished the game with eight hits apiece. Three Titans posted multi-hit efforts.

Certa's final line saw the senior tagged for three runs on eight hits, while striking out six over 6.0+ innings. Gatchell earned the win with two hitless innings as the lefty fanned three.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 0, Augustana 5
One rough inning proved to be the difference in game two, as Augustana pounced early. The Vikings coupled a pair of misplays with a string of hits to charge ahead, 5-0, into the third.

Sophomore Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) was spectacular in relief. Getting an early call from the bullpen, Pool limited Augie to one hit over four scoreless innings with one strikeout. Gatchell was hit with a loss after throwing the first two innings.

Offensively, Illinois Wesleyan's bats were held in check. The Titans mustered two hits to the Vikings' eight.

The Green and White is back in action tomorrow, April 11, at Inspiration Field for Senior Day. First pitch against North Park University is set for 1 p.m., with Senior Day recognitions scheduled for prior.
