No. 17 Men’s Volleyball Sweeps North Park

Win sets up CCIW Regular Season Championship match Saturday, April 4

CHICAGO - The 17th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team needed just 70 minutes to take down North Park University Wednesday night, April 1, using set scores of 25-14, 25-13, and 25-13 to breeze to the win. With the victory, IWU improves to 21-4 on the year, and 8-1 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while NPU dips to 1-23 overall, and 0-9 in league play.

With the win, and No. 4 Carthage College's victory at North Central College tonight, Saturday's regular season finale will have the CCIW Regular Season Championship at stake, as IWU and Carthage both bring in a CCIW standing of 8-1. The winner of the match will earn the regular season championship, along with the top seed in the CCIW Tournament.

Three Titans guided the offense while playing in their hometown. Junior Bryce Williams (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney M. Young) led the team with seven kills, doing so on an impressive .500 attack percentage. Sophomore Ethan Kuziela (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) and freshman Aydin Provost (Chicago, Ill.-Mount Carmel) each added six kills, hitting .364 and .417, respectively.

Kuziela notched a team-best two aces, and was second on the squad with 14 assists. Junior Brenden Reutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) tallied a team-high 20 helpers. Together, the duo helped piece together an offense that finished with 37 kills on a .448 showing, compared to NPU's 14 kills on a sub-zero night.

Leading the team with nine digs, sophomore Ben Zima (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) was crucial in the Green and White defense that kept North Park out of the match. Senior Jace Milka (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Plainfield East) added four digs, while the trio of Kuziela, Reutter, and sophomore Gavin Rohlwing (Tower Lake, Ill.-Barrington) added three apiece. Sophomore Wilson Spaulding (Tucson, Ariz.-Catalina Foothills) totaled a team-leading three blocks, followed by two stuffs each from Rohlwing and junior Patrick Dasbach (Lombard, Ill.-Willowbrook)

The Green and White never trailed in the match, beginning with two straight Kuziela kills to go up in set one, 2-0. Following a sideout, Williams punched one through the block, and Rohlwing clipped a Vikings player for an ace, making it 4-1. NPU used three straight points to tie the set, but a 5-1 run by the Titans saw momentum swing in favor of the visitors. Kuziela found Provost for back-to-back kills before the two teams traded service errors. Spaulding followed with an ace, and Provost pounded a set from Kuziela down for a kill, quickly making it 10-4.

The Vikings hung close, but six straight points for Illinois Wesleyan put the set out of reach, beginning with Reutter feeding Williams for a kill. Provost and Spaulding teamed up for a block to follow, and Kuziela roped down a serve for an ace. After a bad set by the Vikings, Williams downed a dish from Kuziela to bring the score to 21-10.

Rohlwing powered down a set from Kuziela to push set point, and Kuziela notched a kill of his own to lock in set one, 25-14.

Ahead by two nearing the halfway point of the set, the visitors rattled off six straight to begin their coast. Reutter set Kuziela for a kill to kick off the run, and Rohlwing followed a Vikings miscue with a kill. Williams got in on the action, as he smashed a ball down the line, bringing up an NPU timeout. Milka unleashed a serve for an ace out of the break, and Reutter found Williams for another kill to complete the run, as IWU took a 17-9 lead.

The Titans never let up, ending the set on a 7-2 run. A kill by Dasbach was followed by two straight NPU errors to push set point. The Vikings responded with back-to-back points, but junior Ethan Keutzer (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis University High) connected with Dasbach for a kill to end the set, 25-13.

The IWU offense stayed hot, as Rohlwing destroyed a set from Reutter, perfectly bouncing it off the line for a kill to begin the third. The Tower Lake, Ill. native followed with two straight blocks, teaming up with Kuziela and Dasbach, respectively, to take a 3-0 lead. North Park tied the set by taking the next three, but a kill from Dasbach got the Green and White a sideout, beginning a 4-0 run. Spaulding followed two straight Vikings errors with a solo stuff to push the lead to four, 7-3.

Illinois Wesleyan cruised the rest of the way, ending with an ace from sophomore Charlie Bialek (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Bolingbrook) to complete the quick sweep, 25-13.

The Titans return home to host Carthage Saturday, April 4, for the regular season finale at 3 p.m. IWU will honor its lone senior, Jace Milka, prior to the high-stakes match.
