Titans head to Louisville, Ky. for spring break trip

ST. LOUIS, Mo.- The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell to No. 12 WashU, 18-8, Sunday, March 8 at Kelly Field in St. Louis, Mo. IWU sees its record slip to 1-8, while the sweep propels the Bears to 9-0.

On the mound first for the Titans was senior Will Davidsmeier (Virginia, Ill.-Beardstown). The right-hander earned his first start of the year, logging a season-high four innings and accounted for five runs, while allowing six. He let up seven hits and allowed three free passes before giving way to senior Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) who lasted just an inning. Senior Lucas Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) ensued Shamhart and sophomore Brennan Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) concluded the action on the mound.

Junior John Phillip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) enjoyed a big day at the plate, logging three hits in four at-bats. The slugger brought in two runs and scored the same number. The three-hit day is the first of the season for Ferraro and his fifth multi-hit game of the season. The Green and White tallied eight total hits in 34 at-bats, while walking twice.

WashU went to work quickly offensively to open up the game. With Davidsmeier looking to roll through the first after two quick outs, three straight doubles boosted the Bears in front 2-0. The Titans responded with a two-out rally of their own when senior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) tripled to right center. Senior Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) followed Wolfe with a groundball to the shortstop. In what looked to be a sure out, a throwing error led to Willard being safe, scoring Wolfe from third.

A calm third inning from both sides led to a storm of runs for the Bears in the next two frames. Three runs came across to score in the fourth on just two hits as a pair of free passes and a balk helped WashU expand its lead to 6-1. The Red and Green piled on more in the fifth inning with five hits bringing home four runs for a 10-1 advantage.

IWU fought back for a run in the top half of the sixth. Ferraro singled to start the inning, but two rapid outs stymied the potential for a big inning. The Titans settled for one on a sophomore Joel Strand (Ridgefield, Conn.-Greens Farms) single through the left side of the infield. After tacking on the run in the sixth, IWU followed with another scoring inning plating three runs on three hits. It was another two-out rally from the Green and White, sparked by sophomore Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) and Ferraro. With a runner aboard, Ford singled to keep the inning alive for Ferraro who notched a double down the right field line to score two runs. After another throwing error led to a baserunner, junior Luca Morelli (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Adlai E. Stevenson) hooked a double of his own down the left field line to bring in Ferraro and close the gap to 11-5.

A pair of runs in the bottom half for WashU answered the scores of the Titans, and two more in the eighth inning made the score final at 15-5.

The Green and White will enjoy its spring break in Louisville, Ky. as it begins a three-game set against Spalding University beginning Saturday, March 14.
