No. 20 Men’s Volleyball Sweeps No. 10 Loras in Top-20 Showdown

Reutter collects 1000th career assist

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The No. 20 Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team continued its historic season with a sweep of 10th-ranked Loras College Wednesday night, March 25. The win marks the best ranked victory in program history, as the Green and White pick up a key College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win. IWU ups its record to 19-4 overall and 6-1 in league play. Loras falls to 17-5 overall and 3-4 in CCIW action.

Illinois Wesleyan hit a remarkable .423 for the match, finishing with just six attack errors on the night. Sophomore Ethan Kuziela (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) led the way with 14 kills, a match-high, on a .481 clip. Freshman Aydin Provost (Chicago, Ill.-Mount Carmel) followed with eight kills while junior Bryce Williams (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney M. Young) and sophomore Gavin Rohlwing (Tower Lake, Ill.-Barrington) tacked on six apiece.

Junior Brenden Reutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) topped the team with 20 assists, including the 1000th of his career, becoming just the second Titan in program history to eclipse the mark. Kuziela contributed 12 to complete a double-double performance.

Defensively, Kuzeila, sophomore Ben Zima (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South), and Williams notched seven digs each to tie for the team lead. Kuziela was part of five blocks total, including a solo stuff, while Rohlwing stuffed a team-best six at the net.

Overall, IWU was dominated in the match serving up a 7-1 lead in aces as well as advantages in kills (39-36), assists (35-32), digs (32-26), and blocks (10.5-2).

The two teams traded points to begin the contest, but IWU separated itself with four straight points. Following an LC service error, the trio of Provost, Rohlwing, and senior Jace Milka (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Plainfield East) teamed up for a block. After a Loras attack error, Provost and Rohlwing stayed hot at the net, rejecting another attack to make it 9-4.

The Duhawks fought back to bring the gap to three late in the set, but a 4-1 run for the home team put it out of reach. Rohlwing buried a set from Reutter for a kill and another triple block followed a service error, as Williams, Rohlwing, and Kuziela sent a Duhawks attack down. Williams pushed one off the LC block for a kill to make it 23-17. On set point, Kuziela set Provost, who punched it off the block for a kill, finalizing set one, 25-19.

An 8-3 lead to begin the second set vanished late, as the score stood tied at 18. Looking at an out of system play, Zima sent a pass to Provost for a kill, igniting a 6-1 run for the Titans. Reutter followed by punching an ace to the back of the court, and Rohlwing got the crowd on their feet, as he buried an over-pass to bring up a Loras timeout, 21-18.

Loras got a sideout after the break, but Kuziela got the Titans a quick one as well, as he smashed a set from Reutter. The sophomore stayed hot, as he solo stuffed an attack on the ensuing point, and Milka used the tape to drop in an ace, setting up set point, 24-19.

The Duhawks refused to go down, though, as they battled back to make it a one-point gap, but an untimely service error gifted IWU set two, 25-23.

Set three was all Illinois Wesleyan, as the home team never trailed. Provost downed a dish from Kuziela, and a ball handling error put IWU's cushion at three, 8-5. After a service error, Kuziela connected with Rohlwing for a kill, followed by a Reutter ace, making it 10-6.

Maintaining a four-point difference, the Green and White took six of the next seven points to take control. Kuziela found Provost for a kill, as the freshman roped it down to make it 18-13. Milka followed with a tool, and a bad set by Loras put the match win in view for the Titans, 20-13. After a sideout, Reutter found Rohlwing for a kill, and Kuziela smashed down two straight to bring up match point, 24-15. The sophomore capped off his day by burying a set from Reutter, securing the sweep, 25-16.

Illinois Wesleyan will embark on a road trip for the next two matches, beginning with a battle at North Central College Saturday, March 28. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside Gregory Arena.
