Ingold, Tomhave Impress in Baseball's Series Win Against Oshkosh

The duo combined for 10 strikeouts

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team took the rubber match, 7-2, against University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, capping off its first series win of the season Sunday, March 22 at Horenberger Field. With the win, IWU moves to 3-12, as UWO drifts to 4-6

Senior Marshall Ingold (Rochester, Ill.-Rochester) gave head coach Micheal Kellar all he could ask, going four innings, giving up just two runs, both of which occurred in the first inning. The lefty was tagged for four hits while striking out three. Sophomore Brennan Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) was the first and only member out of the bullpen. Tomhave shoved his way to the win allowing just one hit, while keeping Oshkosh scoreless over the last five innings. The hard-throwing righty finished with two new career-highs, with five innings pitched and seven strikeouts. Ingold and Tomhave combined for eight scoreless innings after allowing the scores in the first.

The Green and White's bat was tamed early by Oshkosh's starter Baris Brua, but bursted open with five runs in the final three frames, highlighted by a three-run seventh. Sophomore Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) recorded his second career four-hit game, as he did so once in his rookie season. He drove in two runs for the fifth time in his young career. Senior Jack Flagg (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) had a deuces wild day, with two hits, two runs, and two RBI's.

Ingold sat down the first batter of the game on the ninth pitch of the at-bat, but two walks in the inning would come back to haunt the southpaw. With two outs in the inning, Oshkosh's seven-hole hitter connected for a rope into left field to break open the scoring, 2-0.

An inning later, IWU strung together hits with a single from Flagg and a double down the right field line from junior Luca Morelli (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Adlai E. Stevenson). With runners in scoring position, junior Pat Carmody (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) smoked a line drive to the center fielder, deep enough to bring home Flagg and cut the UWO lead in half, 2-1.

Illinois Wesleyan would draw the score even in the following inning. The nine-hitter sophomore Michael Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) boarded first on a hard-hit single up the middle. Sophomore Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) moved Gurgone up a base into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and Ford brought him in on a single up the middle.

Wrapped in a pitchers dual midway through the game, scoring chances were limited but the Illinois Wesleyan offense capitalised on an opportunity in the sixth. With two outs in the inning, Carmody and senior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington Ill.-Bloomington) both worked full count walks to bring up Gurgone. Gurgone hit a one hopper off the diving shortstop's glove and ricocheted into center field to score Carmody.

Another opportunity presented itself for Flagg an inning later. Ford led off the seventh with a base hit into right. Junior John Phillip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) stretched a high fly that fell down the third base line into a double, setting up runners in scoring position. Still with nobody out, an opposite field hit by Flagg scored both runs with Ferraro beating the throw from right with a head first dive into home. Wolfe kept the party going with a line drive over the first baseman's head, which plated Flagg to give IWU a 6-2 advantage. The home team tacked on more insurance when Ford singled home Hudik to boost the lead to 7-2.

After its short stint at home, the Green and White hit the road Wednesday, March 22, for the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener at No. 23 Millikin University. First pitch from Workman Family Baseball Field will be at 6 p.m.
