One Up, One Down for Softball at Millsaps

Titans return to action at home, March 25

JACKSON, Miss. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team took game one, but dropped game two at Millsaps College Wednesday night, March 18. The Titans (5-7) came from behind to top the Majors, 6-4, before the Majors (14-5) rode an early start to a 5-3 victory.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 6, Millsaps 4
Three straight doubles sparked the Titans in the top of the second. Trailing 1-0, Illinois Wesleyan got going with senior Casey Wissmiller's (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) one-out double. Sophomore Jillian Bollard (Roselle, Ill.-St. Viator) poked a double to center, trading places with Wissmiller and evening the score. After sophomore Ella Hermes (Peru, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) drew a walk on four straight balls, junior Annika Brown (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) dropped a two-run double down the left field line. The timely hit scored two and pushed the Green and White in front, 3-1.

Millsaps used a double of its own to manufacture a run in the third and pull within one, 3-2, but IWU scored in the fourth to reclaim a two-run cushion. Freshman Isabella Boskey (Huntley, Ill.-Huntley) opened the frame with a double and was bunted over to third by Bollard. Hermes then came through with a timely hit, finding green in the right-center gap. Boskey scored easily from second as Illinois Wesleyan moved ahead, 4-2.

The Majors plated two runs in the sixth to tie the game at four into the seventh. Sophomore Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) singled and was bunted into scoring position. Down to its final out after a groundout, senior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) laced a run-scoring single to Wilkens. Wissmiller drove in an insurance run with an RBI knock to extend the lead to two, 6-4, with Millsaps coming to the plate one last time.

Junior Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) needed five pitches to retire the first two Majors in the bottom of the seventh. Ella Morgan Sears singled to right to bring the tying run to the dish, but Beckman gobbled up a grounder at short to secure the win.

IWU finished with eight hits, matching MC's output in the game, with the heart of the order doing most of the damage. Wissmiller went 2-for-3 in the five-hole, while Brown notched two RBIs. The Titans registered five doubles in the contest.

Holland ultimately came away with the win, throwing three innings in relief. She allowed just three hits while moving to 3-3 on the year. Senior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) started the day and went four innings with five hits and four runs allowed while striking out three.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Millsaps 5
The Majors pounced for three runs on one hit, two hit by pitches, and two walks in the bottom of the first inning. Millsaps rode that lead into the fifth, where it tacked on another run to move ahead, 4-0.

A leadoff triple from Beckman gave Illinois Wesleyan a prime scoring chance in the sixth. Wissmiller walked and Boskey put a ball in motion to plate a run. Senior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) and sophomore Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) followed with RBIs to bring IWU within one, 4-3.

Millsaps used a hit by pitch and a walk to manufacture an insurance run in the sixth to send things to the seventh. Beckman doubled down the right-field line with two outs, but the Titans were unable to find any more offense as they came away with a split.

Illinois Wesleyan recorded five hits to MC's four, with Grace Wilkens and Post each notching two hits.

Senior Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) came out of the pen for 6+ innings of work. She held Millsaps to just three hits alongside three strikeouts. Sophomore Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) was the pitcher of record, dropping to 0-1.

Illinois Wesleyan returns home next Wednesday, March 25, for a doubleheader with Monmouth College. First pitch of the twin bill is slated for 3 p.m. at Inspiration Field.
