Titans drop contest, 12-10

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team was upended at Pfeiffer University Tuesday, March 17, dropping the battle, 12-10. With the loss, IWU stumbles to 5-4 on the season, while PU improves to 7-2.

Junior Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) and sophomore Charlie Burghardt (Milwaukee, Wis.-Brookfield Central) led the Green and White offense with three points apiece. Kahoun net three goals, while Burghardt tied his career-high with three assists. The trio of senior Cole Kennedy (Walnut Creek, Calif.-De La Salle), junior Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel), and sophomore Owen Miller (Brookfield, Wis.-Brookfield Central) each added two points, all by way of goals.

Sophomore Wyatt Hart (Littleton, Colo.-Valor Christian) led the defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Timothy McHugh and senior Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) followed with four ground balls apiece, while seniors Kade Miers (Cincinnati, Ohio-St. Xavier) and Billy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) each notched two caused turnovers. Rocco led the Titans at the X with a 7-of-15 showing.

Logging all 60 minutes in goal, sophomore Jaymeson Zackery (Saint Paul, Minn.-Eastview) finished with 17 saves to keep the Titans in the game, but was tagged with the loss.

As a team, IWU finished with the advantage in saves (17-15), won the turnover battle, 21-20, and went 24-of-27 on clear attempts. Pfeiffer slimly recorded leads in shots (44-41), shots on goal (29-20), ground balls (32-25), caused turnovers (13-10), and faceoffs (13-9), along with a near-perfect clear attempt day, going 24-of-25.

The Green and White opened with the first three goals in the game, beginning with Timothy McHugh finding the back of the net to crack the scoreboard first. Senior Kaden Gammelgaard (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich) ran through the entire Falcons defense to make it 2-0 with 9:06 on the clock. Burghardt fed Miller for a goal, making it a quick 3-0 advantage for the visitors with 7:43 remaining in the first period.

Pfeiffer cut the lead to one with two straight scores to make it 3-2. Kahoun ripped a shot past the goalie for a man-up goal, making it a two-score lead, with 3:10 to play in the opening quarter.

Kennedy buried a pass from Burghardt to give the Titans a 5-2 lead at the 1:44 mark. Zackery came up with a save, but Pfeiffer came up with a stop of its own to close out the first period, 5-2.

The second period was commanded by the Falcons, who used five straight goals aided by a flurry of penalties by the Titans to jump ahead, 7-5.

A save by Zackery got the Titans in transition, and Kahoun net his second goal of the game to cut the deficit to one, 7-6, closing out the first half of action.

Pfeiffer put up the first two goals of the second half to go ahead 9-6. After a Kahoun shot was saved, Timothy McHugh scooped up a ground ball and scored to bring the Titans within two, 9-7, with 9:50 to play in the third period. Rocco won the ensuing faceoff to keep momentum in favor of the Titans, and after a wide shot, Kennedy drove through the Falcons defense for a goal, making it a one-score game at the 8:40 mark.

Looking poised to score on its offensive possession, sophomore Jeremy Langosch (Grayslake, Ill.-Warren Township) found Kahoun, who ripped a shot past the Falcons goalkeeper to even the game at nine with just under three minutes remaining in the third period. Burghardt sailed a pass to Miller for a goal with time dwindling down in the third period, as IWU took a 10-9 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Falcons scored twice to begin the fourth period, putting the home team up by one, 11-10, with 7:41 to play.

Zackery came through with his 17th save of the game, stopping a point-blank shot, but a penalty kept possession in favor of Pfeiffer with 2:18 remaining in the game. PU utilized the man-up opportunity to net the dagger, closing out the game, 12-10.

Illinois Wesleyan will remain on the road, as it heads to Wabash College Wednesday night, March 25. Action is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET at Fischer Field.
