Certa Blanks Owls in Split

Boskey smacks first career homer in game two win

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team took one of two in a twin bill at Mississippi University for Women Sunday afternoon, March 15. The Titans (3-5) saw a comeback fall short in game one, 5-3, before besting the Owls (5-8), 4-0, in game two.

Game One: MUW 5, Illinois Wesleyan 3
Facing a 5-0 deficit entering the top of the fourth inning, junior Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) knocked a single up the middle to give the Titans life. Sophomore Riley McDoniel (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) followed with a double, bringing in Pinter to score and get the Green and White on the board.

Sophomore Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) was brought on to pinch hit with two runners on and no outs in the top of the fifth. Pool delivered an RBI via a groundout to the Owl's shortstop to take the score to 5-2 with momentum on the side of IWU. Two quick outs ensued, squandering the Titans chances of a big inning.

Freshman Hannah Burns (Charlestown, Ind.-Charlestown) made her Titan debut, relieving junior Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) of her pitching duties in the bottom of the fifth. Burns took the circle facing a 5-2 deficit and, with a runner on first, senior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) caught an Owl stealing to record the first out of the inning. Burns followed with the first strikeout of her collegiate career and a groundout to end the fifth.

A scoreless top of the sixth for the Titans brought Burns back into the circle for the bottom half. Two quick outs from Burns and a base running error gave the IWU offense a fighting chance headed into the top of the seventh.

Seniors Casey Wismiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) and Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) quickly got on board the base paths via back-to-back singles. Sophomore Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) followed suit with a bunt single of her own to load the bases. A strong start to the inning prompted a MUW pitching change. The change proved to be effective, as a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Kelsey Bartels (Downs, Ill.-Tri-Valley) was the only offense the Titans could muster up, ending game one in a 5-3 Owl win.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 4, MUW 0
Senior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) went the distance in a complete game shutout, allowing four hits. Certa fanned a season-high six as she boosted her record to 2-1.

IWU outhit MUW 6-4 in the game, with six different Titans notching knocks. Sophomore Jillian Bollard (Roselle, Ill.-Saint Viator) and freshman Isabella Boskey (Huntley, Ill.-Huntley) were credited with RBIs, as Bollard drove in two. Boskey's came via a solo homer, the first of her career.

Illinois Wesleyan scored in the second as wild pitches paved the way for the game's first run. Freshman Paige Veller (Buffalo Grove, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) slid home safely to push IWU ahead 1-0. Bollard tacked on a run one inning later, coming through with a sacrifice fly to bring home sophomore Julia Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) and double the lead.

In the fourth, Boskey stepped into the batter's box with one out and crushed the first pitch she saw for a roundtripper over the left-field fence.

Leading 3-0 into the seventh, the Green and White plated another run in its last trip to the dish. A one-out walk from freshman Macy Iwanus (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) got things started as Julia Wilkens entered as a pinch runner and promptly swiped second. McDoniel followed with a seven-pitch walk to keep the inning going, and then with runners on first and second Bollard roped a single to extend the lead, 4-0.

Illinois Wesleyan travels to 23rd-ranked Belhaven University Tuesday, March 17. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. in Jackson, Miss.
