Men’s Volleyball Wins Program-Record 13th Match, Downs Augie

Titan defeat Vikings in four sets in road

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team picked up win No. 13 on the season, as the Titans defeated College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Augustana College on the road in four sets Wednesday night, Feb. 25. With the victory, IWU moves to 13-4 on the season, eclipsing the program's single-season win record, and 1-1 in league play. Augie dips to 6-4 overall, 1-1 in CCIW contests.

Illinois Wesleyan's offense was powered by three double-digit kill efforts. Sophomore Ethan Kuziela (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) led the way with 14 kills, followed by 12 each from junior Bryce Williams (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney M. Young) and freshman Aydin Provost (Chicago, Ill.-Mount Carmel). All three hitters finished with attack percentages north of .200. Kuziela also led the Green and White in assists, finishing with 31 to complete a double-double performance. Junior Brenden Reutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) followed with 17 helpers.

Defensively, Williams notched his second double-double of the season, as he posted a team-best 10 digs. Sophomore Ben Zima (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) added eight, while Kuziela and senior Jace Milka (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Plainfield East) each finished with six. At the net, sophomores Gavin Rohlwing (Tower Lake, Ill.-Barrington) and Wilson Spaulding (Tuscon, Ariz.-Catalina Foothills) made their net presence known, as both totaled four blocks on the night.

As a team, the Titans dominated the Vikings statistically, finishing with 54 kills on a .210 clip while limiting Augie to 39 on a .098 showing. IWU also registered the advantage in assists (53-38), blocks (10-3), and aces (5-0), while the Vikings finished with the upperhand in digs, 49-44.

Trailing 22-20 in the opening set, IWU mounted a late comeback, beginning with a kill from Rohlwing. A Viking error tied the set at 22, but Augie took the next two to cued up set point. Once again, Rohlwing downed one for a kill, and an AC miscue leveled the score at 24.

Facing set point again, Reutter found Williams for a kill, and Kuziela fed Spaulding on the ensuing play to quickly swing momentum in favor of the Titans, forcing Augie to call timeout, 27-26. The break did not disrupt the Green and White, as Kuziela dished another set to Spaulding, who finalized the opening set in favor of IWU, 28-26.

Tied at five, Illinois Wesleyan used a 5-1 run to seize control of the second. Reutter found Kuziela for a kill to get the Titans going, followed by an ace from Milka. Augie caught a sideout on an IWU error, but gave the Green and White two freebies to follow, forcing the home team to call timeout trailing 10-6.

The Vikings trimmed the lead to one, 13-12, before Illinois Wesleyan regained momentum. Kuziela found Provost for a kill to up the lead to two, and two AC errors made it 16-12, as Augustana used its final timeout of the set.

The Green and White cruised the rest of the way, and Provost polished it off with a kill, to put the Titans ahead two sets to none, 25-21.

Falling in a closely contested third set, 25-23, Illinois Wesleyan responded in the fourth with a 6-1 start. Reutter dished a pass to Kuziela for a kill to open the set, and Rohlwing followed the two teams trading service errors with an ace. Kuziela and Wilson sent a Vikings attack back for a block, followed by a solo stuff from Wilson. Reutter set Kuziela for one of his 14 kills on the night as Augie used an early timeout.

Coasting through the set, Augustana found its way back into the match, as a 5-1 late Vikings run saw the lead slip to two, 22-20. Kuziela downed a dish from Rohlwing to right the ship, and two attack errors finalized the fourth set, and the match, 25-20.

Illinois Wesleyan returns home for a date with North Central College Saturday, Feb. 28. Action is slated for 3 p.m. inside a busy Shirk Center, which will be playing host to the CCIW Indoor Track & Field Championships and the CCIW Men's Basketball Tournament Championship Friday-Saturday, Feb. 27-28.
