Softball Splits Opener with IC

Titans take game one, drop game two

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The 20th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University softball team used a comeback to snag game one over Illinois College, but saw the offense silenced in game two as the Titans (1-1) split with the Lady Blues (1-3) at Inspiration Field Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Illinois College 2
Illinois Wesleyan churned out eight hits to three from IC in the opener. Sophomore Riley McDoniel (Orland Park, Ill.-Sandburg) headlined the game with a 2-for-3 showing alongside two RBI and a run scored. Seniors Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) and Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Senior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) threw a complete game, limiting the Lady Blues to three hits over seven innings. Certa fanned two alongside two walks.

Illinois College bolted out to a two-run lead on three first-inning hits, but the Titans pushed one across the plate in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit in half. McDoniel whacked a double into left-center and came around to score on Post's RBI single off the top of the centerfield wall. The run trimmed IC's lead to 2-1 into the second.

Miscues by the Lady Blues gave the Green and White chances in the second and third, but IWU could not capitalize as IC carried a 2-1 edge into the fourth.

Certa made quick work of Illinois College before the Titans used two walks and a timely hit to drive ahead, 3-2. Junior Annika Brown (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and sophomore Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) reached via walks with two outs with McDoniel stepping to the plate. The sophomore outfielder delivered a duck-snort double to left to bring home two and push IWU in front by one.

An incredible diving catch by Grace Wilkens in center in the sixth kept the Lady Blues in check, as Certa buckled down to grab the win. Certa retired the final 13 IC batters en route to her first win of the year.

The Lady Blues were held without a hit from the third inning on as Certa retired 13 straight to close out the win.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 0, Illinois College 11 (5 inn.)
The Titans dropped game two, 11-0, in five innings as IWU finished without a hit. IC used a three-run first and a five-run second to take control, 8-0. The Lady Blues tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth to put the Green and White away.

Illinois Wesleyan will trek to Eau Claire, Wis. for a four-game weekend at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The weekend tournament is set for Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 28-March 1, at UWEC's indoor facility. The Titans will take on UW-Eau Claire as well as Simpson College and St. Kate's.
