Women’s Soccer Clipped by Carroll

Titans host Augie Wednesday

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team came up on the wrong end of a high-scoring affair at Carroll University Saturday, Oct. 17. The Titans (7-2-5, 3-1-1 CCIW) scored twice in the second half but ultimately fell to the Pios (3-5-7, 2-2-1 CCIW), 3-2, in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play.

Illinois Wesleyan fired off a 7-1 lead in shots over the first 40 minutes of action, but could not find the back of the net as all four on target were stopped by Carroll's keeper as the match stood locked, 0-0.

After fending off a CU free kick from inside midfield, a Titan goal kick was played off the chest of a Pio inside the IWU defensive half and dished ahead quickly. A bouncing ball was settled by the Pios' Carmella Nowak, where three Titans converged but not before a pass was slipped to Michaela Williamson at the top of the 18. Williamson stepped to the ball and in one motion fired a shot past the diving reach of IWU for a 1-nil lead in the 41st minute.

The Titans nearly found the equalizer just before the break, but a shot from junior Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) was scooped up as the Pios remained in front at halftime.

Carroll doubled its lead in the 64th minute, but Illinois Wesleyan came back with a response 17 seconds later. Moving the ball into the box right off the restart, IWU was awarded a free kick along the six. With Wiley and senior Ava Mapes (Golden, Colo.-Lakewood) standing at the ball, the Titans caught the Pios on their heels. A quick touch by Wiley was followed by a Mapes shot to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

Less than 10 minutes later, Carroll scored to reclaim a two-goal cushion, 3-1, to leave IWU chasing.

The Titans broke through once again, this time courtesy of freshman Zoe Kormah (Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community) off an assist from Junior Ellen Dahlquist (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) with just over 10 minutes to play.

The Green and White mustered three shots in search of the draw, but all three were turned away by CU, as IWU came away with a 3-2 loss.

The Titans put the Pios under constant pressure with an 18-6 lead in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corners but 10 CU saves kept IWU at bay.

The Green and White looks to bounce back and snap its two-game losing skid Wednesday, Oct. 21, as Augustana College visits Neis Field. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
