Men’s Volleyball Claims Two Sweeps at Wabash Tri

Titans improve to 8-2 on the year

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team took home two sweeps at the Wabash Tri, hosted by Wabash College, Saturday, Jan. 31. IWU (8-2) defeated Maranatha Baptist (25-7, 25-8, 25-15), before downing Wabash (0-1) with set scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-20.

Illinois Wesleyan 3, Maranatha Baptist 0
Illinois Wesleyan opened its day by cruising to a sweep of Maranatha Baptist (0-4) behind set scores of 25-7, 25-8, 25-15. A dominant IWU offense recorded 34 kills on a .491 clip, the second-highest hitting percentage for a match in program history. The Titans held the advantage in kills (34-11), aces (13-2), blocks (6-2), assists (31-10), and digs (18-16), while the IWU defense limited MBU to a -.200 showing. The 13 aces for the Green and White ranks second in a three-set match and third all-time.

Freshman Bram Eggen (Geneva, Ill.-Marmion Academy) led the offense with six kills on a .444 attack percentage. Sophomore Wilson Spaulding (Tuscon, Ariz.-Catalina Foothills) closely followed with five kills on a .500 showing, while fellow sophomore Dylan McKeon (Chicago, Ill.-St. Laurence) and freshman Jay Clifton (Milford, Ohio-Archbishop McNichols) each finished with four. Spaulding notched a career-high four aces amid spectacular serving for the Titans. The trio of Eggen, McKeon, and freshman Dylan Brannigan (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) each added two aces.

IWU had three setters combine to lead the offense in its stellar performance. Freshmen Owen Rollinson (Rockton, Ill.-Hononegah Community) finished with a team-high 10 assists, while Ryan Jilly (Antioch, Ill.-Antioch Community) closely trailed with nine. Junior Ethan Keutzer (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis University High) rounded out the top-three with seven helpers.

Defensively, Spaulding, sophomore Daniel Overstreet (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego), and Brannigan tallied a team-best three digs. Sophomore Lane Sunley (Flossmoor, Ill.-Homewood Flossmoor) led the net defense with a career-high four blocks. Eggen, freshman Alex Alberstett (Roscoe, Ill.-Hononegah Community), and freshman Stan Peck (Elmhurst, Ill.-York Community) each added two.

Illinois Wesleyan took quick control of the opening set, as a Spaulding kill to begin the match with a 5-0 run. Two attack errors sandwiched an ace from freshman Will Arvizu (Skokie, Ill.-Niles West), and Keutzer found Spaulding for another kill on the ensuing point. The Sabercats clawed back to make it 5-3, but a 9-1 run for IWU put the Green and White ahead 14-4, forcing MBU to call timeout.

The Titans never lost control of the set, as Spaulding stayed hot and put it away with a kill to take set one, 25-8.

All tied at one in the second, Rollinson found Alberstett and Clifton for back-to-back kills, and Eggen followed with two straight aces. An MBU miscue made it 6-1 in favor of the Titans early before the Sabercats could get a sideout.

After the two teams traded service errors, Spaulding went back to serve and aced Maranatha Baptist to begin a service run that lasted 12 points. The 12 straight IWU points featured two kills from Peck, a kill from Eggen, a block from Alberstett and Peck, and three more Spaulding aces. The string of points pushed the Titans ahead 23-5, as they handedly took set two, 25-7.

The closest of the three sets, Rollinson dished a set to Clifton for a kill to pad IWU's cushion to six, 16-10. Rollinson kept the offense rolling, as he fed Eggen and Alberstett for two straight kills to stretch the gap to 18-10.

The lead was enough for the Green and White to maintain, as they completed the sweep by taking set three, 25-15.

Illinois Wesleyan 3, Wabash 0
The Titans completed the road trip with another sweep behind a strong IWU offense. The Green and White finished with leads in kills (40-31), hitting .367 to WC's .260, aces (9-3), blocks (6-3), assists (36-28), and digs (25-23).

Junior Bryce Williams (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney M. Young) and freshman Aydin Provost (Chicago, Ill.-Mount Carmel) led the offensive attack with 13 kills apiece, as the duo hit .524 and .364, respectively. Provost added a team-best three aces and a trio of blocks.

Sophomore Ethan Kuziela (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) notched a team-best 19 assists to go along with nine kills, a team-leading nine digs, and two aces. Sophomore Ben Zima (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) tacked on six digs to help guide the defense.

In a close contest to begin the match, Zima found Provost for a kill to make it a two-point lead. After a Little Giants error, Provost roped an ace to make it 16-12, forcing Wabash to call timeout.

Remaining close, Williams downed back-to-back kills to extend IWU's lead to five, 20-15. Provost pushed set point with another ace, and after Wabash fought it off on the ensuing rally, junior Brenden Reutter (Frankford, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) found Kuziela for a kill to secure set one, 25-20.

Trailing 18-16 deep into the second set, Reutter set Williams for a kill to spark a Titan comeback. Provost and freshman Dylan Quinn (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove North) teamed up to block the Little Giants on the next rally, and Kuziela fired off two straight aces to put the visitors back out in front, 20-18. Wabash battled back to cut IWU's lead to one, 23-22, but Kuziela fed Provost for a kill before locking in the comeback win with a kill of his own, 25-22.

The Green and White took control of the third set early, as junior Patrick Dasbach (Lombard, Ill.-Willowbrook) downed a set from Kuziela to crack open a 6-1 run. Quinn followed with an ace, and Provost solo stuffed Wabash before the home team could register a sideout. Kuziela quickly got momentum back for the Titans with a kill, and Provost added another ace to his day. A WC miscue made it 9-3 early for Illinois Wesleyan.

IWU kept control of the set the rest of the way, as an attack error completed the second sweep of the day for the Titans, as they took set three, 25-20.

The Green and White remain on the road, as it heads to Dominican University for a battle Thursday night, Feb. 5. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
