Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Titans Feature Four Different Scorers in Dominant Win

Kedzior, defense record second shutout of the week

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team featured four different scorers in a 4-nil shutout over Wabash College Saturday, Sept. 27 at Neis Field. IWU caps off the non-conference slate at a 6-1-2 mark, while Wabash trips to 4-6-0.

The Titans jumped on the board early in the 4th minute, thanks to junior Joey Rodino (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd), who capitalized on the set-up from junior Ryder Coleman (Bannockburn, Ill.- Deerfield). Coleman dished it to Rodino off the throw-in from freshman Hunter Reingberg (Washington, Mo.-St. Francis Borgia). Rodino's header was lifted up and over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper to make it 1-nil.

Wabash controlled time of possession for the remainder of the first period, but the IWU defense was a stalwart and took its lead into the halftime break.

Out of halftime, the Illinois Wesleyan offense came out swinging. In the 69th minute freshman Colby Thomas (O'Fallon, Mo.-Fort Zumwalt North) built the advantage to 2-nil on a rebound from senior Logan Tierney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) that zipped to the back of the net.

Over the next 20 minutes, Illinois Wesleyan added two more insurance goals, the first coming off the head of senior Christian Schmidt (Wichita, Kan.-Northeast Magnet) in the 83rd minute. A set play off a throw-in bounced off Rodino's head and found the head of Schmidt, who looped it into the right side of the net.

Freshman Daniel Smazil (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) found himself back in the boxscore when Tierney drove down the far side of the pitch and volleyed it across to Smazil. Smazil went one-on-one with his defender, and beat the goalkeeper to the back of the net.

The neon jersey shined bright in net, as senior Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary-Grove) recorded his second shutout of the week. Kedzior endured 11 shots with five of them finding his hands, including a diving stop in the 68th minute to keep the 1-nil lead and propel momentum for the IWU offense.

Tierney, Rodino, and Reinberg all recorded multi-point games, with Tierney and Reinberg supporting two. Rodino, with a goal and an assist, tallied a career-high three points. The Titans posted 10 shots, with four of them landing on goal

IWU will enjoy a week off before it looks forward to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play Saturday, Oct. 1 at Carthage College. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. and ensues the women's match.
